1.7.4: Context window sizing changes at rest

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Using Claude Opus, when the chat box is waiting for my input it shows a context full at 70%. As soon as I hit enter it jumps to 90%. Then when its done running it drops back to 70%. Is the context window losing its mind? The 90% seems too full for what its worth.

Steps to Reproduce

fill up window watch context size.

Operating System

MacOS

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. Could you let me know if you’re using Claude Opus Thinking? Also, are you running it in Max mode? If you’re seeing this, it likely means thinking is occupying context for a while and then gets cleared after the reply. You can also run the /summarize command to force-clear the context.

I use claude opus max, no thinking. At “rest” it shows the lower number, as soon as it starts again it jumps back up to the full number.

Summarization basically generally just breaks everything so wouldn’t use it unless there’s some configuraiton that can be intelligent. /summarize fifo (wipe out older stuff first), /summarize removeattachment X, /summarize other interesting context curation ideas.
