Every time I am discussing stuff with the agent, for some reason cursor needs to obscure text with a “2 new messages”-message quickly followed up by new amounts of new messages. This “message” has no informational value to me, but it does obstruct text that does have infomrational value. it has a cross to remove it, but seconds later it appears again. I don’t know who requested this, but for me it is an unnecessary annoying that suddenly appeared a few days ago. Please get rid of it. If a specific person or organisation wants this, then make it an opt-in for that person or organisation.
P.s. the same complaint exists around the “Push” notification, that obscures text as well, irrespective of whether a branch has a remote or not. And if it is not push, some other word appears there. What is it with you guys, that you want to obstruct text that is informational to me with text that means absolutely nothing to me?
P.S. I was not able to upload the screenprint: it got an unspecified error, “please try again”.
Hey, thanks for the detailed report. I’ll go through it piece by piece.
“New Messages” is a relatively new indicator in agent chat. It shows up when you’ve scrolled up while the agent is still replying, so you can tell new text arrived below. Right now, closing it with the X only hides it until the agent’s next message, so it comes back a couple seconds later, and there’s no option to fully disable it yet. I’ve passed this on to the team.
For now, the workaround is: it disappears as soon as you scroll all the way to the bottom of the chat, or click it to jump down. Once the agent is done replying, closing it with the X will stick and it won’t come back.
About “Push”: that’s the Git action hint above the input box. It suggests the next step for the current branch (Commit, Push, or Create PR), so sometimes it shows a different word. Quick check: does this repo have a remote set up at all? What does git remote -v output? If Push is showing in a repo with no remote, that’s exactly what we should fix.
About the screenshot: if you try attaching it again, PNG or JPG up to a couple MB is best. If you still get an error, let me know and we’ll look at that separately.
Let me know what you get for git remote -v, and also tell me if the scroll-to-bottom workaround doesn’t help.
Thanks for the quick response. I was a bit annoyed while posting, I apologize. I will check myself better next time. Lets hope an option appears soon to disable the message and the push line. My branches never have a remote. I only use a remote on the main, which is when I push. However, the PUSH always appears, whether on a branch or on main. Still. even on main, I really don’t need a hint to push. It is something i am very meticulous about at the end of a chat completion. Even if it would only appear when there is a remote, I don’t push all the time, so the PUSH word would continuously be there and obstruct text.
Again, thank you for your response, and the answer to your question is whether the agent is on main or on a branch. I usually do development on a branch, which is always local.
Thanks for clarifying, and no worries about the tone. Your questions are totally fair.
On Push, what you’re describing for local branches is exactly what we should fix. If a branch has no remote at all, offering Push doesn’t make sense, and it shouldn’t behave like that. I’ve passed this to the team.
On main it works differently. There is a remote, and the hint shows up when there are commits that haven’t been pushed yet. That’s intended as a “next step” hint. But I hear you that you don’t want it even in that case, and that you’d like an option to disable both indicators, the Push line and New Messages. I’ve shared that as an opt-out request. I can’t promise timelines, but if there’s an update, I’ll reply here.
For now, the current workaround for New Messages is still the same. The pill disappears as soon as you scroll the chat all the way to the bottom, or click it to jump down. After the agent finishes replying, closing it with the X stays.
Many other tools use symbols for the same purpose: signilling stuff. Instead of using the words to say “3 new messages”, use a symbol with the number 3 inside. Same goes for Push, Commit and PR. Use a symbol bar in the header or footer. Its both unobtrusive and clear. Hovering over a symbol you can always display what it is in a word. Just leave the text clear. That saves a few options as well: settings doesn’t need to be bigger.
Well, I hope this helps, it would certainly help me if you guys would think more along these lines.
Thanks, that’s a solid suggestion. The idea of using compact icons, like a number inside the icon for new messages, and separate icons for Push, Commit, and PR, in the header or footer with a tooltip on hover, is a clear and clean alternative to text that overlaps content. I’ll pass this to the team along with the previously mentioned request for an opt-out.
I can’t share a timeline yet, but if there’s an update on these indicators, I’ll reply here. If anything else gets in the way of your work, let me know.
