The agent model picker does not keep the model I selected. On every sent message it resets to Grok 4.6 High Fast, even after I change it. This is extremely annoying: it overrides an explicit choice, can run the Fast variant I did not want, and forces me to re-select the model before every turn.
This looks like the Grok 4.5 Fast-toggle / recommended-model override that Cursor staff already acknowledged as a known bug, now happening with Grok 4.6 and inside an existing chat on every send, not only on new chats.
Steps to Reproduce
Open an Agent chat.
Select a model other than Grok 4.6 High Fast (or select Grok 4.6 High with Fast off).
Send a message.
Observe the picker reset to Grok 4.6 High Fast.
Repeat: the reset happens again on the next send.
Expected Behavior
Honor the selected model for the rest of the chat. Do not reset to Grok 4.6 High Fast (or re-enable Fast) on send. The last explicit user choice should stick.

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. A couple things you can do right now to get control back:
Turn off auto switching to the recommended model. Settings → Agents → Conversation → Default Model, then pick “Last Used”. After that, Cursor will stop swapping your choice to the recommended model in new chats.
Turn off Fast for a specific model. Open the model picker in the chat, hover the model you want → Edit → turn off Fast. That will lock in the non Fast version.
The model selection resetting on every message inside an already open chat shouldn’t happen. It’s not a setting on your side. I passed this to the team and we’re tracking it. I can’t share an ETA yet, but I’ll reply in the thread if there’s an update.
Try the steps above and let me know if it helps keep the model fixed.
Thanks for clarifying. If Last Used didn’t help and it still switches to Grok 4.6 High Fast, that shouldn’t happen, and it’s not something in your setup.
A couple things that’ll help us narrow it down:
Try fully closing Cursor and reopening it after you set Default Model to Last Used. Sometimes the setting only applies after a restart.
If it keeps switching after a restart, please share:
your Cursor version in Help > About
where the model swaps, when you open a new chat, or inside an existing chat on every send
which model you’re trying to lock in

This was already completed, however, it appears now not to be changing after the restart. I will monitor and hopefully I do not need to report back. This was very short lived, as I opened a new window and it immediately swapped to Grok 4.6 High Fast.
I’ve seen this with a few folks on my team. The common thread is that they’ve all hit their token budgets for the month, so Cursor switches to a model that’s free/included on our plan.
Worth checking: Is Grok 4.6 High Fast billed as $0 on your plan? Is it included in a monthly unlimited bucket where other models are not?
