Agent reply box disappears after response — stuck in read-only subagent view? panel

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Hi — after the Agent finishes a reply, the input/reply box at the bottom of the Agent side panel often disappears, so I can’t keep typing in the same chat.

What I’m seeing
I open the Agent panel and send a message normally.
After the response, the bottom reply box is gone.
It seems to happen when I’m looking at a read-only subagent view (e.g. Explore/Bash) instead of the main/parent chat.

I’ve tried everything the agent has given with no success.

Steps to Reproduce

The bug is always there; I currently cannot get access to the normal UI;

Expected Behavior

Stay in the main Agent chat with the bottom input still available after a response.

Yes - I cannot continue my work.

Hey, thanks for clarifying the context. You’re in the regular editor, and when you click a subagent card or link, its read-only transcript opens in the same chat tab. That’s why there’s no input field. The subagent view is read-only by design, and it’s not obvious how to get back to the main chat. Nothing is lost. Your main chat is still active, and the subagent keeps running in the background.

Try getting back to the main chat like this:

  • Open Chat History (the history icon at the top of the agent panel) and select your main parent chat. It should reopen with the input field.
  • Or click the back arrow in the top bar, or use your mouse back button. On 3.13.10, back navigation from the subagent view should work.
  • Or press Ctrl+N to start a new chat, then reopen the original chat from History.

Let me know which option worked, and how you got into this view in the first place. Was it by approving a subagent request, clicking a link, or clicking a card? If none of these gets you back to the main chat, tell me and I’ll log it as a bug.

Thank you for the quick reply. It’s working OK now; I tried your suggestions but not sure which one worked; I think it may have just opened correctly this morning.
The first time it started after 3.13.10 update on 7/13; at that time I uninstalled 3.13.10 and installed 3.10.20 and disabled auto update; yesterday i updated to 3.13.10 and the same thing happened again only I couldn’t resolve with the older version;
This morning it’s now working OK with both versions. I’m on 3.13.10 and everything is back to normal.

Glad everything’s working again. Quick context for next time: when the read-only sub-agent view opens (Explore/Bash), the input field is hidden on purpose. Replies go through the main chat, so nothing gets lost, and the parent chat keeps running in the background.

If you end up in that view again without an input field, you can get back to the main chat like this:

  • Open Chat History (the history icon at the top of the panel) and select your main chat. It’ll open with the input field.
  • Or use the back arrow in the top bar, or the back button on your mouse.
  • Or press Ctrl+N to start a new chat, then open the original chat from History.

We’ve noted that getting back to the main chat isn’t obvious. It’s something we want to make clearer. If it happens again and none of the steps help, especially if clicking the main chat title in the header does nothing, please post here. It’ll help us narrow down the issue.
