Agents Window: new integrated terminals always open in the first repo in multi-root workspaces (no folder picker)

Cursor IDE — Agents Window (Glass layout)

Describe the Bug

In a multi-root workspace (multiple Git repos in one .code-workspace), opening additional integrated terminals from the Agents Window always creates them in the same repository — typically the first folder listed in the workspace file.

In the classic Editor Window, opening a second terminal in the same multi-root workspace correctly prompts:

“Select current working directory for new terminal”

That folder picker is missing in the Agents Window, so I cannot easily open terminals in sibling repos without manually cd-ing every time.

Actual Behavior

Every new terminal opens in the same repo (the primary/first workspace root). No folder picker appears. I have to manually cd into the other repos.

Editor Window comparison

  1. Open the same .code-workspace in the Editor Window (Cmd+Shift+N from Agents Window).
  2. Create a second integrated terminal.
  3. The folder picker appears and lets me choose which repo to use.

Environment

  • OS: macOS (darwin 25.x)
  • Cursor version:
    Version: 3.19.13
    VS Code Extension API: 1.128.0

    Date: 2026-09-04T17:41:16.065Z
    Layout: Agent Window
    Build Type: Stable
    Release Track: Default
    Electron: 42.10.0
    Chromium: 148.0.7778.280
    Node.js: 24.18.1
    V8: 14.8.178.38-electron.0
    xterm.js: 6.1.0-beta.291
    OS: Darwin arm64 25.6.0
  • Layout: Agents Window / Glass
  • Workspace type: multi-root .code-workspace with 3 local Git repos

Workaround

  • Open terminals in the Editor Window when I need per-repo shells.
  • Manually cd after each new terminal in Agents Window.
  • Configure terminal.integrated.profiles with explicit cwd per repo in the workspace file (heavy-handed).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create or open a multi-root workspace with at least 2 Git repos (e.g. via Agents Window → Select Multiple).
  2. Work from the Agents Window on that workspace.
  3. Open an integrated terminal (Terminal panel / Open Terminal).
  4. Open a second terminal (Terminal: Create New Terminal, or the + button).
  5. Repeat for a third terminal if needed.
  6. Run pwd in each terminal.

Expected Behavior

When creating a new terminal in a multi-root workspace, Cursor should either:

  • show the same “Select current working directory for new terminal” picker as the Editor Window, or
  • open the terminal in the repo associated with the currently focused file/agent context.

This matches standard VS Code multi-root terminal behavior.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey @jul1an, thanks for the detailed report.

You’ve diagnosed it pretty well. In the Agents Window, new terminals always start in the first folder of a multi-root workspace, and the “Select current working directory” picker that the Editor Window shows isn’t wired up there yet. This is a known gap we’re tracking, and I’ve added your report to it.

In the meantime, the options are roughly what you’ve already found: cd into the sibling repo after opening the terminal, or right-click the workspace in the Agents Window sidebar and choose “Open in IDE” when you need per-repo shells. One heads-up: setting terminal.integrated.cwd in the workspace file won’t help in the Agents Window, since it passes the folder explicitly and that setting is only consulted when it doesn’t.
