You used to be able to delete chats directly from the chat history panel, but now in version 2.6.11, you can only archive them.
Then when you go the Agents Side Bar, you can delete the chats there, but it requires hovering, clicking “…” or right clicking and then pressing “Delete”. This makes it terribly inefficient if you want to delete like 30 chats.
I try to keep agent/chats requests as separated as possible, to avoid a single long context chat of different requests.
So I can have small or multiple chats that are solely for asking questions or simple things, I’m not going to clutter a current focused complex agent/chat for a simple auxiliary question.
For simple tasks, I also don’t need to keep the agent chat once the task is done.
I only keep complex or agent chats that I think I might revisit later one.
Otherwise I don’t want to clutter my chat history of unimportant chats, it’s harder to retrieve what matters later on and it can quickly pile up!
edit: also, archiving a current chat doesn’t remove it from the chat tab, so I have to manually click “close” on top of it.
Once I move past a certain part of the project, I would like to delete all related chats. This makes it easier to search past chats since there are less to search through.
No, when you search chat history, archive results come up (even if displayed in archive foldout), but if you use the “find with agent” feature to search past chats it will search archived ones.
Archive is useful for hiding old chats, but having a Delete option is important for data integrity and user control. Users should be able to permanently remove specific chats (e.g., test runs, sensitive or incorrect content) so their history and data actually stays under their own control.
People do want to clean up their machines rather than saving everything forever. Imagine your solution to junk in your house was to throw everything in your garage.
For claude I do actually have a system to back up some sessions to object storage but I’m not a hoarder and I don’t save everything. When I do that I typically wipe it locally.
Obv I can use AI to clean these up but should make it easier.
Would like to +1 support for bringing back the delete button. Archive is useful but so is the ability to delete in some instances. Not a fan of removing functionality to force another over something as simple as delete/basic user control.
