Is the fun over? Are they going to suppress all new models now and restrict them to government and other elites only? Will there be a stock market crash tomorrow as people realize this risk will be never-ending? Will they restrict currently available frontier models also?
It is a bit strange that Anthropic put so much effort and money into building models they thought were too dangerous to sell and then is surprised people say it’s too dangerous to sell. But it seems like this is a fundamental issue across the entire industry. Governments across the world aren’t going to be eager to allow technology that could be used to undermine their own power via hacking, organization of revolution (see The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress), building verboten weapons, etc. It seems like there is consensus building that AI is a weapon. The Luddites may have won.
