I love ask mode … it prevents me from having to type “don’t do anything just tell me” ad nauseam. But too often it starts writing code. It doesn’t apply it, but it writes it. I don’t want it to write code, even just example code. I just want to ask it questions.
Yes I’ve recently been getting the same problem - it doesn’t respect Ask mode anymore, and just tries to start editing the code, then gets frustrated because it can’t, but still doesn’t seem to recognize that it’s in Ask mode and runs in circles for a while. I don’t know why this previously-working feature has suddenly stopped working. Seems to be the common theme of features in cursor these days unfortunately…
I’m experiencing the same issue. Sometimes I just want to ask a simple question, but it gets stuck in a loop trying to write files. The only way to stop it is to cancel the operation, which still consumes credits and session memory. This only happens when I set the model selection to “Auto”. If I manually select Opus 4.6, the issue doesn’t occur. The downside is that I end up having to use a more expensive model, even for questions that don’t really require it.
Maybe add a rule: “When in Ask mode, avoid creating code snippets, only brainstorm with me.“
Or if you don’t want that rule in every message, then add a command (a simple md file containing instructions to AI). Attach into a chat message with /

Would be curious to know what model(s) you face this on! Composer 1.5 should fix a lot of issues Composer 1 had (which means many Auto runs will also see improvement).
