Authentication error in Cursor IDE while web chat works normally

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Cursor IDE shows an authentication error whenever I try to use AI chat, even though I am logged in. The web version works normally with the same account. I am only signed in on one device.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor IDE while signed in.
  2. Open AI chat and send any message.
  3. The request fails with an authentication error suggesting that I log out and back in.
  4. Open the Cursor web app with the same account; chat works normally there.

Expected Behavior

AI chat should work in Cursor IDE when the account is already logged in, just as it does in the web app.

Additional Information

I have confirmed that only one device is logged into this account. The issue affects only the IDE; web chat continues to work normally. What could cause the IDE session to be treated as not logged in, and how can I fix it?

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

i got this issue the same

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. This error means the sign-in saved inside Cursor is no longer valid on our side, even though the app still looks like you’re signed in. The web app uses a separate sign-in, so it still works there.

Please try a clean re-login from inside the app:

  1. In Cursor, open Cursor Settings with Cmd+Shift+J.
  2. Under General, click Log Out.
  3. Fully quit Cursor with Cmd+Q not just closing the window.
  4. Open Cursor again and click Sign In.
  5. Finish signing in in the browser page and let it bring you back to Cursor.
  6. Open a new chat and send a test message.

Before you log out, also check which email is shown in Cursor Settings. It looks like the app might be signed in to a different account than the one you’re using here. It’s worth confirming it’s the account you want, and that it’s not being used somewhere else at the same time. Parallel sign-ins from different devices can invalidate the IDE session.

If the error comes back after this, please share the time it happened and the new Request ID.
