Auto immediately switches back to Composer 2.5 Fast (locked) on Free Plan

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Cursor Desktop always switches from Auto to Composer 2.5 Fast (locked) on the Free plan.

Auto appears for about one second after opening the app, but it immediately switches back to Composer 2.5 Fast (locked).

Even if I manually select Auto, it immediately switches back again.

Because of this, I cannot use any AI features in the desktop app.

I still have 51% of my free usage remaining, so this does not appear to be a usage limit.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor Desktop.
  2. Open a new Agent or Chat.
  3. Auto briefly appears for about one second.
  4. It immediately switches back to Composer 2.5 Fast (locked).
  5. Try selecting Auto manually.
  6. It switches back to Composer 2.5 Fast again.

The issue happens every time.

Expected Behavior

Auto should remain selected on the Free plan and allow me to use AI normally.

It should not automatically switch to Composer 2.5 Fast (locked).

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. This isn’t a bug, it’s expected behavior. Right now on the Free plan without your own API key, the model picker is locked to Composer 2.5 Fast with a lock icon. That’s why Auto shows for a second when you open it, then switches back to Composer 2.5 Fast. That’s by design.

Main thing, the lock doesn’t disable AI. Composer 2.5 Fast is our own fast model, and it fully works on Free. On your account, requests are going through and usage is being counted normally, so AI features are available, just through this model.

The lock icon only means you can’t change the model to Auto or others unless you upgrade to Pro. If you need model selection, that’s on Pro.

Let me know if Composer 2.5 Fast actually stops responding or errors out. If it does, please send the Request ID right upper corner of the chat context menu > Copy Request ID and we’ll take a look.

Thanks for your explanation.

Based on your explanation, I should be able to use Composer 2.5 Fast on the Free plan.

However, I can’t use it at all.

Every prompt immediately returns “You’ve hit your usage limit”, even though my account still shows 51% of my Free Plan usage remaining.

So the problem isn’t the model selection. The problem is that Composer 2.5 Fast itself is unusable on my account.
