Chat list history missing after new device login

i opened my account in another pc and my chat list history is now gone from both devices.
how to restore ?

hi @beru the usage on one machine is not synched to another. We have this for now as a feature request.

Manual Profile Migration

When moving between machines:

  1. Export your profile from the source machine
  2. Import it on the target machine
  3. This gives you full control over which settings transfer

Settings Sync

Your Cursor settings can be synced by:

  • Using the same account across machines
  • Manually copying configuration files from .cursor directory (similar to VS Code’s .vscode directory)

Hey, which OS are you using? I have a method that allows chat synchronization between devices.

I wouldn’t care if that was the issue; my main machine’s chat history is gone, and the new history on the new machine is also gone

@beru has something changed on your old machine? e.g. folders moved?

windows 11, my issue is that chat is gone from my main device, not that its not synced to the new device

no , i even started a chat today , fixed stuff and that chat is also gone , the only new thing is the login on the new machine , so i assume the issue is linked to that

Its not common that chat history disappears. Was there an Cursor update for your old machine since?

You should be able to restore it from your personal backups.

i don’t click on the update prompt, and I haven’t seen one yesterday when I still had the chats history.

how can i restore it from my personal backups?

The personal backups are any backup methods you have on your computer to backup your data.

Cursor config is usually on C:\Users\[YourUsername]\.cursor\ so you can restore them to the same location.

Before making any changes to that folder make a copy first.

You said restore them to the same location when i haven’t made a backup of that folder, the history is already gone, who makes backups of that folder?

You should backup all your data regularly and best automatically using backup software from your OS or another 3rd party solutions.

ok , maybe next time , where did my history go tho..

i just made a new chat “hello”, then restarted cursor and i don’t see it in the history

Its likely in the database in that config folder. Not sure why it would be gone.

Could you post here the full version info of your Cursor?

Do you have any project open, or are you opening a blank Cursor window?

I just logged out of both devices and logged in again on my main device. And the chats are still not saved.

I’m now realizing that chats are shown per project, so if it’s a new project or a new window, the history is always blank. So there is no actual issue. I was just confused, sorry about that
