The ui buttons in the top right corner changed completely, and the chat window toggle button disappeared. I now need to make a lot of clicks to make it open/close or use a hokey combination, which isn’t convenient. You made my work much slower. Why, why, WHY did you do this?
And it’s not just in Agent mode, now it’s in every layout, no matter what I choose: Editor, Agent, etc. it’s all the same, the chat switch button is just not there anymore.
This isn’t a bug. The chat toggle button was removed on purpose in favor of customizable layouts. Lee from the Cursor team explained the change here: [Megathread] Cursor layout and UI feedback
How to open and close chat now:
Use hotkeys: Cmd+I or Cmd+L to toggle the Sidepanel
Cmd+E to toggle the Agent layout
Customize your layout via the gear icon in the top-right corner
The team is working on adding more keybindings to switch between views. You can find all available shortcuts in the docs: Keyboard Shortcuts | Cursor Docs
Try Cmd+I or Cmd+L, it should be faster than a button. Let me know if that helps.
I was one of primary contributors to adopt Cursor to Chewy engineering, if you deleted my last reply but ignore the report I will be advocating to replace cursor to another IDE on our next review
Why would you do that!? I’m so mad about that I’m barely trying to keep being polite now! WHY WOULD YOU REMOVE THE PRIMARY FEATURE BUTTON OF YOUR APP? ARE YOU INSANE? Now I have to click twice to open the chat and twice again to close it. I’m not going to keep it open all the time and waste my screen space. It’s not comfortable to use keyboard to show and hide all the time, that’s the reason the UI exists TO FREAKING CLICK ON IT! Am I dumb or something? Please explain why would you remove the button in favor of the Agents SideBar button that’s useless.
okay I canceled the subscription since I’ve red multiple complains about that and it seems you’re not going to fix that anyway, and that loses any sense for me at this point
These are exactly my thoughts. Actually there still seems to be a layout that still has this button, even in the latest version, but I don’t know how to bring it back. The button disappears for good if you at least once click one of the new layouts in the top right corner gear menu. After that you seemingly can’t bring it back anymore. Maybe if you first install an older version so the old editor layout is back and then upgrade it and never touch the new layout buttons it will work? I will test it out
I found no way to not being forced to view the agent side bar. I dont want to see it. I just want to be able to toggle on and off the chat without ever the agent side bar coming in my way.
Same problem for me. The toogle chat button is a very useful feature for me, I used a lot.
The previous layout was much better. There is a way to return to the previous layout?
I understand this may not be the most convenient option, but have you considered trying Cursor CLI? You could have the CLI on one screen and the editor on another—it might offer the best of both worlds.
That said, I agree—having that button was good UX.
Yeah this is ridiculous. Kills my workflow of frequently hiding/showing the chat window to get more room, particularly if I’m on a smaller screen. Diverting us to keyboard shortcuts isn’t a solution. Should be an option in Settings to show this button.
I don’t know why you always bully a little off button. You’ve added a button at the top specifically for quickly opening a new chat, but why does it take two steps to turn it off?
Don’t tell me has hotkeys, One click > Three keys. Simple as that.
I got an update that has this today. It’s terrible. I NEED a single click to both open and close the chat panel. I’m constantly swapping back and forth for screen real estate reasons and the mouse is the most efficient way to do this in my workflow.
There’s zero reason for the “add chat” button to disappear when you click it. Just keep it in the UI and rename it to “toggle chat” and your work is done.
Guys, I’ve finally figured it out!!! Clicking the “Editor” mode doesn’t actually switch back to editor mode. It’s broken. You need to press CMD+E to switch back to Editor Mode. Then the button will toggle the chat panel correctly, as expected.
The “mode” is just a collection of settings. As soon as you click the button your settings have changed and now you’re not actually in Editor mode anymore. So, it only works until you try to use it a second time.
I don’t know how, but the button started working for me again somehow. The Show/hide right panel button now works the same as the chat toggle button worked before. Maybe it was one of the latest updates that did this.
