Cursor Auto Mode Forced Me Back to Grok 4.6 — Now My Usage Is Gone?

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Seriously, what the ■■■■ is going on with Cursor Auto?

I manually switched away from Grok 4.6 because I DON’T want to use it, but Auto apparently switched me back to Grok anyway — and now my Grok usage is completely gone.

Why can Auto override my manual model choice? At least give us an option to completely exclude specific models from Auto. This is ridiculous.

Steps to Reproduce

Start a Cursor Agent chat using Grok 4.6.
Switch the model from Grok 4.6 → Auto.
Continue using the Agent, assuming Auto will avoid Grok 4.6.
Cursor automatically routes requests to Grok 4.6 again.
Continue using the Agent without realizing Grok is being used.
Grok 4.6 usage/quota is eventually exhausted.

Operating System

Linux

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Auto just picks between Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.6 (as far as I know). Just pick Composer 2.5 if you don’t want Grok 4.6. There’s no difference.

Auto just picks available models, why would it not pick Grok? It picks other models too, not just Cursors/SpaceXAi’s own.

But yeah maybe small configurator for Auto in config could be a plus.

Also I thought Auto chooses models based on the task and tries to pick best suited for the task, but apparently that feature is only in Enterprise plans - in Indiv. plans there is no smart routing or reasoning in picking the model

Before Grok 4.6, my usage was completely fine — I could use my subscription for the whole month with roughly the same tasks. Now my tokens are gone in around 15 days.
The problem is that Auto seems to pick Grok for almost everything, even small tasks, and burns through the quota extremely fast.
There really should be an option to exclude specific models from Auto.
