I used Cursor (desktop version) to take a folder from within a git repo in Azure and create a new repo with just that folder and all the commit history. Created a skill from the steps after it was done. This was a while ago (July 30) and there were multiple updates since then. I wanted to use it again today but it doesn’t appear in the available skills when I start typing the name and if I paste the full name in I get “An unexpected error occurred. Request ID: ***********”
I see the skill in a folder C:\Users\me.cursor\skills\extract-folder-to-new-repo\SKILL.md
Steps to Reproduce
Unknown. Could be from version updates between 7/30 and now
Expected Behavior
Skills should be migrated from version to version.
That path is exactly where Cursor reads personal skills from, and it reads them in place, so nothing migrates between versions. The file being there is fine.
Quick things to try:
Fully quit Cursor (File → Exit, not just closing the window) and reopen, then type /extract in a new chat. If you’ve got other heavy apps open, quitting those first can help too.
Still missing? Reload the window (Ctrl+Shift+P → Developer: Reload Window).
If it’s still gone, open Customize → Skills in the sidebar and check whether extract-folder-to-new-repo shows an error there, and let me know whether your other skills still appear. If it’s just this one, paste the top of its SKILL.md (between the --- lines) — a description with an unquoted colon (:) is the usual culprit, and wrapping it in double quotes fixes it.
Thanks for reaching back out. I opened up Cursor today, went to New Chat, picked a folder and typed /extract
I had to wait almost 10 seconds before the box with description appeared on the left and the full name appeared below. That part seems to be working.
I went to Customize and then Skills. At first it showed a box with “Teach Cursor New Skills” but I was clicking different things and at one point it showed “User 0” ; can’t find any user skills. There are two in the skills folder. I can’t figure out how to display that again. I tried using New and entered the name of the existing one. It says “A skill with this name already exists”
