Cursor can’t automatically change from plan mode to agent anymore

Steps to Reproduce

Be in plan mode, then ask it to do something

Expected Behavior

cursor should know when user is requesting action, now there seems to be a hard block

Hey, I can see the screenshot. The model is trying to switch from Plan mode to Agent, but the switch is being blocked.

Most likely you previously clicked Don’t ask again or Never on the auto mode switching prompt. After that, all automatic Plan → Agent switches get silently rejected, and there isn’t a UI to reset this setting yet.

The team is aware of the issue. There’s no ETA yet, but your report helps us prioritize it. Related thread: How to re-enable "Switch to Plan Mode" countdown/reminder?

Hey @ibutab, circling back to this thread. A few things have changed since your post, can you check again on the latest version?

  1. Update Cursor to the latest version. You were on 3.0.4, stable is a lot newer now.
  2. Go to Cursor Settings > Agents and turn on Auto-Approve Mode Transitions. This resets the earlier Never choice that was silently blocking Plan to Agent switching.
  3. In Plan mode, ask the agent to make a change. It should automatically switch to Agent mode.

If you want to keep a confirmation prompt before switching, turn the toggle on and then turn it off right away. That way you’ll get the prompt again instead of a silent block.

Let me know if Plan to Agent still gets stuck.
