In the chat window I was trying to open the file explorer to upload a file, all of a sudden a notification popped up that the Python enviroment is not set up, I clicked on it to go to the settings and the IDE froze and took a couple seconds to come back to life.
Steps to Reproduce
It was sudden, I tried to reproduce it and it did not happen again
Hey, thanks for the report. Based on your description, this looks like a short UI freeze rather than a crash. The window hung for a couple of seconds and then recovered on its own.
The Python environment notification comes from the Python extension. Clicking it opens the Settings page, which renders on the main thread and can freeze for a second the first time it opens. Since Cursor recovered by itself and we can’t reproduce it, there’s nothing solid for us to investigate on our side right now.
A couple things that should help:
Open any .py file, press Ctrl+Shift+P, run “Python: Select Interpreter”, and pick your environment. After that, the notification should stop popping up.
If the window freezes again, immediately open Help > Open Process Explorer and check which process is using a lot of CPU, and roughly how long everything was frozen. Send that info here.
Let me know if it happens again and we’ll dig deeper.
Thanks, I checked the screenshot. Based on it, all processes are at 0% CPU right now, and memory looks normal too. Nothing unusual stands out. But that’s expected because the snapshot was taken after the freeze, not during it.
This kind of short stall is usually only catchable in the moment. If the window freezes again, open Help > Open Process Explorer while it’s frozen and see which process is using the most CPU at that time. That screenshot will be the helpful one.
For now, it looks more like a one-off brief slowdown when opening Settings, not a real crash. Cursor recovered on its own and we can’t reproduce it. If it happens again, send the Process Explorer screenshot taken during the freeze and we’ll dig deeper.
Thanks for clarifying. The fact that the IDE was completely unclickable during the hang matches what we’d expect from a short main thread stall. While the Settings page renders for the first time, the window can stop responding to clicks for 1 to 2 seconds, then recover on its own. This doesn’t look like a real crash.
The Process Explorer screenshot you sent isn’t helpful, unfortunately. It was taken after everything unfroze, so all processes are at 0% CPU. What we need is a screenshot taken while the window is still frozen.
Here’s what I suggest:
Open any .py file, press Ctrl+Shift+P, run Python: Select Interpreter, and pick your environment. After that, the notification should stop popping up, and the trigger should be gone.
If the window freezes again, open Help > Open Process Explorer during the freeze and check which process is using the most CPU. That’s the screenshot we need, please send it here.
For now, this looks like a one-time brief hang when opening Settings, not a crash. If it happens again, send the screenshot from during the freeze and we’ll dig deeper.
