Cursor Crashing Repeatedly?

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

For the last week or more Cursor continues to crash then reopen. I have disabled everything but the chat agent and happens very frequently, resulting in having to start the agent chat over again eating up additional token usage.

Any resolution for this? I am on a Mac Studio M3 Ultra so I know it is not my hardware

Steps to Reproduce

Cursor IDE will randomly crash and restart during agent and planning/building usage

Expected Behavior

Shouldn’t crash

Operating System

MacOS

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Claude Opus 4.6, GPT 5.3, Composer 1.5

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

This is getting annoying really quickly.. having to completely restart agent chats and processes is making this not even worthwhile.

To mention, I have Cursor Ultra and I spend a good bit of money monthly with token usage with you company, so I expected better service

Hey, sorry about the crashes. Let’s try a couple things to narrow down the cause.

First, a few quick checks:

  1. Is your project in an iCloud-synced folder (like Desktop or Documents)? If yes, move it to a local folder like ~/dev. This has already helped with code 5 crashes for a few macOS users: Cursor Crashes Constantly After Latest Update (code: ‘5’) - Bug Reports - Pair Programming with AI

  2. Try launching from Terminal:

cursor --disable-extensions

If the crashes stop, re-enable extensions one by one to find the culprit.

  1. Reset Cursor data (a backup will be created):
cd ~/Library/"Application Support"
mv Cursor CursorBackup

Then restart Cursor.

If that doesn’t help, I’ll need:

  • Logs from Help > Open Logs Folder > main.log (around the crash time)
  • Output from Help > Toggle Developer Tools > Console right before the crash
  • Whether you’re using a VPN or proxy

This is a known issue for some macOS users.

Let me know how these checks go.

I’ve done all that boss, been fighting this issue for a while now. Right as the “we’re having problems contacting the model” issue slowed down, this now surfaces.

No, my project is on my local machine which is primarily used ONLY for Cursor.

I have done the full reinstall, cleaned the project directory, whole nine yards.

If this is a KNOWN ISSUE for MacOS users – wouldn’t it be nice to notify us so we can be prepared instead of wasting time and money in failed tasks because the app crashed and have to start over?

I have same issue but it is on a windows. The same error message as shown in the screenshot that @Johnny_Collins posted. And it crashed while the agent is building, however what i noticed is that the code that the agent has built already saves but that chat dissappears. So most times i just tell the agent to continue and it reads the codebase and continues, but this just uses more tokens.
So please how do i fix the error

edit : It just happened again and i got a screenshot this time. Please i need a urgent fix the agent is wasting tokens

Same error on my Linux workstation:

@Ben09 @adityadutt09 the only way to fix this problem is to get OFF Cursor and move to a more stable and reliable solution like Claude Code. I don’t know why I didn’t make this move sooner, AND it’s saving me over $1,500+ a month.

I’ve been reporting bugs and issues for MONTHS, including when Cursor crashes, I’m still being charged for token usage. They refused to help or even issue any sort of credit, so off I went and you should do the same

Can you elaborate on this? I was under the impression that Claude Code offers far less usage (5.5x less). Wondering what you mean, and how it’s saving you that much vs cursor. I’m very interested, but I feel like the variables mentioned in your reply could use some more explaination/data.

Yep in windows also I say it repeatedly max 2-3 times a day
