Cursor version: 3.21.18 (Help → About)
OS: Windows 10/11
Short description: IDE Agent hangs on “Taking longer than expected”; Chat and Agents window work for the same question
Approximate time it happened: Since Monday 09/21
Request ID: 34f83e60-e52e-4d91-8de9-f9a7f7d9873d
===========
In Cursor IDE Agent, code questions hang on “Taking longer than expected.” Chat works. The separate Agents window also works for the same questions.
Steps to Reproduce
On IDE, open new Agent, select few lines of codes, Control-L, ask to explain the logic of these lines of codes
This has been happening for quite some time. Cursor keeps releasing updates, but the issue still persists. At this point, Cursor has become practically unusable for me.
Since this update, Composer 2.5 Fast has not been fast at all, it sits there “thinking” forever. I like using this model for most of my tasks, but this situation is not working for me. Please figure out what’s going on here, I’d like to be able to continue to use this model. Thanks.
If you are using dev containers can resolve it rebuilding the container, although, you must do it every time agent chat hangs. It is very annoying but it is a solution for now.
Hey @Dong_Do, thanks for the detailed report and the request ID, and sorry this has been getting in the way of your work since Monday.
What you’re describing is a known issue we’re tracking with Cursor 3.21. The Agent in the editor gets stuck before your message is sent, which is why Network Diagnostics pass and the same question works in the Agents Window. It isn’t caused by Netskope or anything in your setup, and the HTTP 464 lines in your logs aren’t related to this hang, so there’s nothing to change on the network side for it.
Until this is resolved:
Use the Agents Window for these questions. It’s working for you on the same machine, so it’s the most reliable option right now.
If you’d rather stay in the editor, fully quit Cursor and reopen it. That sometimes clears it for that window, but it can come back, so switch to the Agents Window if it does.
I’ll post here when there’s an update.
@RafaelLoad@Joseph_Ackerman, from the versions you shared this looks like the same issue, so the same steps apply. If the Agents Window also hangs for you, reply with a Request ID from the stuck chat so we can check whether it’s something different.
@Jonathan_Izecson, thanks for sharing the dev container workaround. Running Developer: Reload Window may be quicker to try before a full rebuild.
The same thing happened when I gave this prompt directly to Claude Sonnet 4.6 in agent mode:
“Ensure that the @plans/Dataverse-Schema-Deployment-Plan.md and the @plans/Dataverse-Schema-Tasks.md documents align with the reality described in the README.md file that is in the scripts folder. When it is time to execute phase 4 of the schema tasks, I want to be sure that all the required assets are generated and that they all end up in the correct places so that phase 5 of the tasks can execute without issues.”
After “thinking” for more than 4 minutes, I stopped the request.
reply with a Request ID from the stuck chat so we can check whether it’s something different<<
Request ID: 42600580-afd4-41a0-9bc4-6fb03911bfc1 is what I got from the … menu after the stop.
I have also stopped and reloaded my current version of Cursor desktop.
Is there a way to undo the upgrade that I did this morning and revert to the version of the application that was running smoothly before I upgraded to the new version?
Thanks,

Cursor 3.21.18 on Windows 10.0.26200 is not usable for work.
The Agent shows “Taking longer than expected”. A reply sometimes appears only after 7–9 minutes. Sometimes it never appears. Sending another message while it is waiting makes the delay longer. With this delay I cannot work.
What I already tried:
Fully quit Cursor and reopened it
Set cursor.general.disableHttp2 to true (HTTP/1.1)
Set cursor.composer.queueMessageDefaultBehavior to queue
Used only one Agent chat
Logs from 24 Sep 2026, about 07:33 IST (UTC+5:30):
Version 3.21.18, stable, Windows x64
The network itself is fast: first_message_network_ms about 1312
The wait is on the PC, before the request is sent: pre_network_stream_setup_ms about 31430, time to first token about 38592
agentExec.waitForProviderRegistration about 21 seconds
transport_mode: websocket
tls.hasCustomCA: true
Both an HTTP/2 transport and an HTTP/1.1 transport are created at startup
Example request id: 2f771a39-d978-48ce-84cb-1c0a7c7f9265
Outcome of that request was success, but the reply was not visible in the chat until many minutes later
Please fix the Windows 3.21 Agent hang. I need a normal reply time so I can work.
I’ve encountered a similar issue in recent versions of Cursor IDE 3.21.18 (Windows 10), yet the Agents Window works fine.
I don’t follow the company’s strategic direction closely, but I really hope this isn’t a deliberate policy by Cursor to push users toward the Agents Window instead of Cursor IDE; if that were the case, a significant portion of developers — those who sometimes still prefer to manually control their code — would be deeply disappointed.
Hi @Jonathan_Izecson Thanks for the question. We haven’t yet resolved this exact issue, in 3.22.7 or otherwise. Additionally, I highly encourage you to rely on the cursor downloads page here: Cursor · Download which includes historical downloads. The one you’ve linked is a page that we have no affiliation with.
The Agents Window is still the most reliable option for now. I’ll post here when there’s an update.
