Cursor IDE freezes and becomes unresponsive

I will give it a shot. I had to unfortunately switch over to Kiro by AWS. Works perfectly without any lag even if I have 10 sessions open without having to delete anything. It’s not nearly as good as cursor in terms of features though, I would def switch back if cursor worked properly without the ridiculous amount of lag.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been fixed yet, it’s been an issue for MONTHS, and it sounds like it’s widespread, and I have this problem too - the entire IDE locks/freezes and I get a spinner mouse cursor. If I continue typing while it’s in the frozen state it’ll crash the IDE. So I have to stop typing, wait for it to come back to life.

It seems to happened when the current chat gets too long, so I’d just open a new chat and that would fix it. But the v1.3 release has changed something with the chat and it’s now pretty much unusable.

Before if I clicked the ‘+’ icon it would replace the currently open chat window with a new one, but now it opens a new tab. Which is fine, I just close the previous tab, but now opening a new chat doesn’t fix it and it’s still freezing every few seconds. Cursor for me is basically unusable at this point. Half the time the entire IDE is locked-up/frozen.

Apparently there’s some fixes to delete history etc which I will try, but that shouldn’t be the fix(!) the IDE should be able to handle chat histories - that’s the whole point of Cursor…

I found another post with the same issue from months back. The solution given there is also the same - to delete the chat history. Really hoping they fix this, it’s very frustrating.

They cant seem to accept that there’s something wrong and keep wanting to attribute it to the chat history or have you do a complete reinstall to fix it. ..

It’s clearly something wrong with cursor this happens to me even on a fresh install the devs need to just accept some responsibility that there’s something wrong with THEIR end and fix it. This should not be happening to this many people if it is just a caching issue or bad install.

Hey, Cursor isn’t the best place for long-term chat storage, as project data files have a limited size. Cursor history also isn’t intended for permanent and reliable storage. To avoid losing information, I recommend saving key data from your Cursor sessions in files and, if necessary, exporting your history using this extension:

this worked but I will be sacrificing my chat history

Please try Cursor Settings > Beta > Update Access: Early Access
