I have been using Cursor on one desktop machine, but I am about to transfer to a laptop while I am travelling. As I understand it, Cursor stores its indexes on Cursor’s servers.

If I have my project source files on my iCloud drive on my laptop, how does cursor know to use the same indexes as were created when I was coding on my desktop? Do I need to specify that I am using the same project?

Thanks,

Julian

hi @julian7 thank you for your question.

Using the same project name (folder) does help, but the indexing feature also scans the files to ensure that any changes are picked up.

Overall it recommended to keep code in Git (and GitHub) for best version control and as Cursor can use builtin GIt features.

With iCloud synching files is not always immediate and complete so please ensure you are switching after iClould synched from desktop and all files arrived on your laptop.

Thanks for that. If I push files to GitHub, does Cursor index those, or my local copies?

We always index local copies as locally you may have edits that are not in GitHub and those edits are relevant for AI replies.

The idea of using iCloud for version control / code syncing terrifies me…

I use 3 different machines with Cursor, and haven’t experienced any indexing issues with the Git repos.

Only major drawback switching from a cloud storage strategy, will be the manual git pull / push.
