### Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

### Describe the Bug

Yesterday I put my Windows PC to sleep whithout closing Cursor. Today I turned it back on and tried to continue working, but I got the usual:

“Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN.”

I closed Cursor, reopened it and it unexpectedly prompted me to log in again. After logging in, it behaved as if I were a completely new user:

- Asked me to go through initial setup again
- Asked me to reconnect/sign in to GitHub again
- UI showed my previous conversation _titles_, but
- When I try to open any of them, it can’t load them (loading forever)

It looks like **all conversations are effectively gone** , even though their titles still appear. Also my Cursor settings.

- Are conversations and settings actually deleted, or just inaccessible?
- Any way to recover them?

Would appreciate any insight or confirmation from others who’ve seen this.

### Steps to Reproduce

Yesterday I put my Windows PC to sleep. Today I turned it back on and opened Cursor to continue working, but I got the usual:

“Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN.”

I closed Cursor and reopened it, and then it started treating me like a brand-new user (setup flow again, re-auth, etc.).

Hey, thanks for the report. Unfortunately, this is a known issue that affects multiple users.

Try restoring from a backup:

1. Fully close Cursor
2. Go to `%APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage`
3. Check the file sizes of `state.vscdb` and `state.vscdb.backup`
4. If the backup file is larger, rename it to `state.vscdb` (make a copy of the current file first)
5. Start Cursor

One user [reported](https://forum.cursor.com/t/lost-chat-history-after-forced-re-login-no-composer-data-handle-found-error/137953/16) a successful restore using this method.

For the future, I recommend:

- Regularly using Export Chat for important conversations
- Backing up the `%APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage` folder

Let me know if the backup method helped.
