I’m pretty sure that a month or two ago I was able to go above 100% usage, and it was mentioned somewhere that with a subscription you get at least 100%. I recall going above it many times near the end of my billing cycle.
Now, when I reached 100%, it automatically switched to Composer 2. Is this something new, and was it announced anywhere?
I asked the same question the support team, and this is the answer I received from the AI assistant. In my case, I have a Ultra subscription, but it pretty much applies to all subscriptions as far as I see:
Your Ultra plan includes two separate usage pools:
Auto + Composer pool: Used when you select “Auto” or “Composer 1.5” in the model selector. This pool has generous included usage at a lower cost.
API pool: Used when you select specific models like Claude, GPT, or Premium. Your Ultra plan includes $400/month in this pool.
These pools are separate by design — you can’t use Auto + Composer pool credits for API models, and vice versa. This is the change you noticed in mid-February when the two-pool system was introduced.
Your current billing period shows you’ve used about $506 in API usage (mostly Claude 4.5 Opus), which exceeds your $400 API pool. That’s why you need on-demand spending enabled to continue using API models.
Your options:
Switch to Auto or Composer 1.5 to use your remaining Auto + Composer pool
Keep on-demand enabled to continue using API models at API prices
Upgrade to a higher tier if you regularly exceed $400/month in API usage
In the past, we did sometimes allow a bit of extra usage past the limit, but it was always variable and not guaranteed. Now, once you hit the Free plan limit, you’re switched to Composer 2, which is expected behavior.
On the Free plan, after you hit the limit, you’ve got a couple options:
Keep working with Composer 2 / Auto until the end of the cycle
Upgrade to Pro ($20/mo), you’ll get $20 of API budget plus generous Auto and Composer usage
