Also happened to me this morning, and it wastes my time to reopen the project, including java building, maven plugin initialzation etc…
Same issue. Cursor uninstalled after restarting the system. Has happened many times before.

Hello,
Same problem here, I install cursor around 10 days ago, and after computer halt, Friday 15/11/2024 cursor folder is completely empty. The folder last edit date is the exact datetime of computer poweroff.
I don’t know if it can be related but I remember having a cursor update proposition when I run cursor for the last time, however I didn’t accepted it.
I’m on Windows 11 Pro, with official cursor version installed (don’t remind the exact version but like I said, it was the last one available like 10 days ago)
Same problem on my pc.
Same issue, second time in a 4 month. Last payment was failed due expired card, I updated payment method and pay, then to make the notification about unsuccessful payment disappear I decided to reboot it. Closed and can’t open again
sadly after so many reports, still no response from cursor team?
Same issue. This is extremely annoying. I can’t believe something that impacts UX so much isn’t prioritized.
I have the same issue. It has happened several times. It’s very anoying.
the issue is too annoying, finally made decision to switch to windsurf
just happened right now. did before as well…
was working on rust, wanted to restart the ide, because the compiler had a hiccup.
Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
Version 10.0.26100 Build 26100
cursor downloaded from cursor.com
version was 0.43.6
new downloadable version is 0.44.5
This has happened to me twice in the last 2 days. I normally use Mac, but been using my Windows 11 machine for the past few days and twice now I’m in the middle of working and then it just uninstalls itself. It closes; I click start and type Cursor and it launches again, then immediately closes. Do it again and it shows an error about “do you want to delete the shortcut?” as the app has been uninstalled. I don’t even feel like installing it again as this is a big pain.
Same issue. Restarted PC and cursor was gone.
I encountered the same problem. After restarting the computer, the cursor disappeared and the installation folder was empty.
Hey, we think this might be an issue specifically with Windows. If you shut down your machine while Cursor is open, Cursor is closed by Windows, but then proceeds to try and auto-update.
As this is a shutdown, the updater is killed by Windows after it uninstalls Cursor, but not before it installs the newer update, leaving you without a Cursor install.
This is just a theory and we are investigating this at the moment so we’ll hopefully feed back soon with a solution.
Happened again. I didn’t shut down my PC when this happened:
- I left my computer on overnight.
- I closed cursor.
- I tried reopening cursor via Github Desktops “Open in external editor”. A window appeared and closed immediately. Trying to reopen cursor again through Github Desktop will show me an error saying that Cursor cannot be found.
May be a question you don’t know the answer to, but do you remember if Cursor prompted you that it had an update before you closed it?
I’m struggling to think of occasions where Cursor could remove itself except during updates!
This just happened to me now. I shut down my Windows and woke up this morning with Cursor uninstalled. Crazy!
Hey, do you know if Cursor had an update pending when you shut down last night?
My cursor just removed itself or uninstalled or whatever, it’s no longer there and I did nothing to cause it. This is extremely painful if all the chat history is gone. How is this still a thing, this was reported more than a year ago, is there any resolve? Do I just re-install it. Is there any official communication on this?
Yes, there was a prompt to update. At the time I had a script running so I did not update for a few days actually bc updating would have required that I stop my script which I didn’t want to do.
Not sure if that helps or if anyone had a similar situation
