Cursor update resets startup default to editor view

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Somewhere else…

Describe the Bug

The latest desktop update changed how Cursor opens, and it is getting in the way of work I already had set up.

For about a year, launching the app took me straight into the Agents window. After this update it opens the editor instead and restores a large set of files I was not trying to get back to. Getting to Agents now means File, then New Agents Window, every time I start the app.

Closing those restored editors is slow too. Each window asks for several confirmations before it will actually close. When a lot of them come back on startup, that adds up.

Settings has the same kind of friction. There is a lot on one screen, and it is hard to tell what belongs together. Customize sits on its own page instead of with the rest of the settings, and the main settings view is still a long list of plain text. Startup behavior and appearance are easy to miss because they are mixed in with everything else. A dedicated section for those would be easier to use.

The part that stings is the default change. I had been opening into Agents for a long time, and this update switched that without an obvious way to keep the old behavior. I would rather keep a default I already chose than have it reset as part of an update.

I use Cursor because the product is strong. This is the first time the app itself has been the thing slowing me down. A clearer settings layout, and a startup choice that stays where I set it, would fix most of this.

Steps to Reproduce

Steps to reproduce

Update from the second-newest version of Cursor to the current one.
Launch the app.
The update changes several defaults with no prompt. The window looks different on launch, and it restores a pile of files I opened at some point and am not trying to work in. None of that gets me to an agent.

From there I close those windows, then switch to the agent view, before I can start the work I opened the app to do.

Expected Behavior

I just want to catch a vibe and work like i have for a year please.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

It’s the latest version as of today.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey @Dillon_Daniel, thanks for writing this up, and sorry the update got in the way of the setup you had been using.

What you’re seeing comes from the editor windows that were open when Cursor last closed. When an update installs, Cursor reopens every window that was open before it, so those editors all came back at once. After that, Cursor keeps restoring whatever editor windows are still open when you quit.

To get back to opening straight into Agents:

  1. In the Agents Window, open Cursor Settings (Ctrl+,) and go to General > Startup.
  2. Set Window Restoration to “Agent Window”.
  3. Close the editor windows you don’t need (File > Close Window in each one).
  4. Quit Cursor from the Agents Window (File > Exit).
  5. Launch Cursor again. It should open straight into the Agents Window.

I’m happy to set stuff again, and already did this, it’s just annoying that I need to go and reenter my configuration again. If I update my app and it does this again, I’m going to be beyond frustrated.

Sorry about that. We do tweak the available settings (e.g. introduce new ones and options) from time to time and it’s likely that that reset your selected setting in this case. I apologize for the inconvenience here.

No apology necessary, I would love if you could escalate this to someone that’s in charge of user experience and ask if this has really been thought through.

I don’t know of a single other software that’s done this in recent memory, and I can’t imagine it’s a practice they would keep up if it results in extremely annoying experiences for end users.

Thank you!
