After reading through different discussions and recommendations on the Cursor forum, I noticed that quite a few users seem to have the same problem I do: **Cursor is evolving so quickly that it’s becoming difficult to keep track of all the updates.**

I know Cursor already shows the current version and update date when you click the app logo, which is useful. The bigger issue is having to constantly decide whether to update, follow every release, or worry about changes affecting an existing workflow.

It would be great if Cursor could give users a little more control over the **update cadence** , for example:

- **Update automatically**
- **Notify me, update when I quit**
- **Pause updates for N days**
- Keep showing the **last updated** date/version
- Optionally provide a simple summary of the important changes since the version I’m using

I’m not asking for fewer updates. Cursor improving quickly is a good thing. I just think users should have an easier way to **control and keep up with that pace** without having to constantly think about updates.

For people using Cursor every day, having this kind of control would make the experience feel much less disruptive.

Hey, thanks for the detailed feature request and the mockup. It’s clear you put thought into it.

Good news, some of what you described is already configurable. Open Settings with `Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+,` and look for `Update: Mode`. There are a few options:

- `default` / `start` - check and update automatically
- `silentlyApplyOnQuit` - this matches your update when I quit workflow
- `manual` - manual only, Cursor won’t update on its own
- `none` - fully disable updates

There’s also `Update: Release Track` stable or prerelease if you want to control how fresh your builds are. As you noticed, version and date are already shown when you click the logo.

What’s not available yet from your list is pause for N days and a summary of what changed since my current version. Both ideas make sense, I shared them with the team as feedback. The update experience is being actively improved right now, so you’re pointing in the right direction.

If one of the modes above fixes the main pain point, let me know how it goes.

Hey,

Can you point me exactly where I can find these options?

Also I had a question related to cursor agent and cursor IDE, while launching the app why we are directed to agent first and then IDE? can we split the two? moreover based on history instead of launching the app ?

Sure. In order.

Update options. Open Settings `Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+,`, then in the search bar at the top type `Update: Mode`. You’ll see a dropdown:

- `default` / `start` checks and updates automatically
- `silentlyApplyOnQuit` updates on quit
- `manual` only updates manually
- `none` fully disables updates

Right next to it, search for `Update: Release Track` and pick `stable` or `prerelease`.

About launching into the Agents Window instead of the IDE. You can set this in Settings \> General \> Startup \> Window Restoration, then choose Last Used Windows. After that, close Cursor while you’re in the IDE window. Next time you open it, it should open the IDE instead of the Agents Window. This is what you meant by based on history, it restores your last session. Also, opening a folder will always open the editor.

If the setting doesn’t stick, update Cursor to the latest version. They fixed a few things around this behavior. Let me know if you can’t find any of this or if it doesn’t work.

hey,
for me Ctrl+Shift+, isnt working : (
The app just got updated and I can see last session being fixed, it would be nice to have the released notes so it would be convenient to know which things were broken and got fixed or new updates I know we do have changelog but floating them after each update in detail in the app would be easier fix to know about new updates only for IDE/agent window?

In order.

If `Ctrl+Shift+,` doesn’t work, open Settings via the Command Palette. It’s more reliable:

1. Press `Ctrl+Shift+P`
2. Type `Preferences: Open Settings (UI)` and open it
3. In the search box at the top, type `Update: Mode` and also `Update: Release Track`

About last session, glad it started working after the update.

About showing release notes after an update with what’s new and what’s fixed specifically for the IDE or Agent window, that makes sense. I’ll pass it to the team as feedback. The update experience is being improved actively right now, so you’re pointing in the right direction. For now, you can check the full list of changes in the changelog: [What's New in Cursor — Latest Updates & Release Notes](https://cursor.com/changelog)

If Settings still won’t open via the Command Palette, tell me your OS and Cursor version and we’ll dig in.

Thanks for detailed steps I’ll look into that, moreover thanks for passing the idea related to release notes after an update : )
