Edit default model in Agent, Plan mode

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Current behavior:
Both Agent mode and Plan mode use Auto as the default model.
When users switch between the two modes, the selected model is reset, requiring manual reconfiguration.

Issue:
This creates unnecessary friction and interrupts the user workflow, especially for users who prefer a specific model.

Expected behavior:
The model selection should be preserved when switching between Agent mode and Plan mode, or at least remember the last selected model per mode.

Steps to Reproduce

Open the application.

Switch to Agent mode.

Observe that the default model is set to Auto.

Change the model to a specific option (e.g. GPT-X).

Switch to Plan mode.

Observe that the model is again set to Auto.

Switch back to Agent mode.

Observe that the previously selected model is not preserved and must be manually reselected.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

+1

I really miss custom mode where we could select our models and keep them there. Now evertime we switch the mode from Agent to Ask to planning and back, it keeps using the same model instead of a pre-selected one.

This is super annoying!!

PLEASE FIX THIS CURSOR TEAM!!!

+1 I really miss this option, its added extra friction to my user experience

I typically use Plan with GPT-5.3, Agent with Opus-4.6, and Ask with Composer-1.5.
I handle a lot of tasks, but switching models each time is a hassle.

It would be great to have an option to either remember the model for each Agent mode or define a default model.
For those who like the existing behavior, it would be perfect if there was also an option to not remember the model per mode and just reuse the previous model!

Totally agree. I’ve hopelessly switched to Auto, just hoping that it picks up the right model. Usually it gives me crap answers, so I’ve got to redo it with a specific model to get a good answer. So yeah this model switching is still a PAIN !!
