# Error: The window terminated unexpectedly (reason: 'crashed', code: '5')

### Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

### Describe the Bug

When opening my existing repository and scrolling up on a chat, I am getting: “The window terminated unexpectedly (reason: ‘crashed’, code: ‘5’)”

### Steps to Reproduce

1. have an existing cursor instance
2. upgrade to v2.1.39
3. Cursor opens with the default dashboard not into a project
4. Click on my most recent project
5. Either get “The window terminated unexpectedly (reason: ‘crashed’, code: ‘5’)” or “The window is not responding”

Within 30 seconds, “Cursor Render” uses 5gb+ of RAM

### Expected Behavior

Cursor should open as expected

Hey, thanks for the report. The massive RAM spike in version 2.1.39 suggests something specific is causing the crash. Let’s narrow it down:

First, try these checks:

- Run `cursor --disable-extensions` from the terminal - does it still crash?
- Open Cursor’s Process Explorer (`CMD+Shift+P` → “Developer: Open Process Explorer”) - which process shows high memory usage?
- Open the DevTools Console (Help → Toggle Developer Tools) and share any errors you see.

@deanrie Running `cursor --disable-extensions` does nothing, also crashes cursor, no terminal output, cursor window shows up for 1 second than exists / crashes.

@ItsWendell, thanks for the detailed logs. This is clearly a memory leak issue, not an extension problem.

A couple of quick questions to help us narrow this down:

- Does v2.1.39 work fine for you? (This helps confirm it’s a regression)

I’ll escalate this to the team.

Definitely a memory leak issue and likely related to the existing SQL database (I wiped the Cursor instance / deleted all preferences from Application Support and started my Cursor instance and preferences from scratch ad it is working again)
