Extreme topic change upon return to agent conversation

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I was working on a standard code issue - fixing E2E Playwright tests in a monorepo.

I returned to the same agent chat this morning. A break of ~15 hours (which I do all the time, sometimes longer).

I asked the chat to fix another round of failing E2E tests and it started talking about a motorcycle animation in a different language. I asked it to translate to English and expressed confusion about the language change.

It stated that it was continuing the conversation about motorcycles that we had been discussing earlier in that chat (we absolutely had not).

Steps to Reproduce

I have no idea how to reproduce it. The only thing I can offer is that I returned to an existing agent chat 15 hours later and all of a sudden it seemed to think it was a different agent in a different chat from someone else.

I have never asked Cursor (or any other IDE for that matter) to animate a motorcycle.

Expected Behavior

It continues with the pre-existing context of the chat and project and acts accordingly.

Additional Information

A fresh agent chat does not seem to have the issue and appears to be working on the actual problem that I asked for.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report.

This is a known bug where chat context can get mixed up, especially in longer chats. We’ve seen similar reports from other users. The team is aware and is tracking the issue.

Your version (2.6.13, March 6 build) is from before the summarization fix. Updating to the latest version should help at least partially. Open Cursor > Check for Updates.

For now, the best workaround is to start a new chat with the agent, like you already found, whenever you hit this issue.

Let me know if it still happens after updating.
