Forced to Reinstall - Infuriating

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I am using Cursor IDE Windows x64 user version. Can’t really describe the series of events that lead up to this, but I am in the middle of working, and the IDE will close. I try to open the IDE back up from terminal, and I get:
exec: /mnt/c/Users/*/AppData/Local/Programs/cursor/resources/app/bin/cursor: Permission denied

I then have to go to the cursor website and download and reinstall cursor IDE for things to work again. This happens at least once a week.

It is seriously infuriating. Not to mention the FREQUENT forced updates. If I close the app and reopen it, it forces me to update. I then have to sit there and wait for a lengthy update in the middle of my workflow.

This seriously interrupts my train of thought and is a major pain point. Please fix this issue ASAP.

Steps to Reproduce

Sorry, not quite sure what exactly triggers this. Will report back on this thread if it happens again and I notice a pattern.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey! Thanks for the report. The “permission denied” error when launching from WSL suggests either file corruption or antivirus interference. A few things to check:

For the “permission denied” issue:

  • Check whether Windows Defender or another antivirus is quarantining/blocking the Cursor executable—review your Protection history
  • Add C:\Users\*\AppData\Local\Programs\cursor to your antivirus exclusion list
  • Check Windows Event Viewer (Application logs) around the time of crashes for any related errors

About frequent updates: you can disable them in settings.

Could you share:

  • Whether you have antivirus software running and any quarantine notifications
  • Windows Event Viewer logs from around the crash time
  • Whether crashes happen shortly after updates

This will help us determine if it’s an antivirus issue or needs deeper investigation. I’ll escalate to the team if we see a pattern.
