Grok Bot 0.30.0 Stuck on Black Loading Screen During Initial Setup on Mac

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

:check_box_with_check: Something else — Grok Bot desktop app

Describe the Bug

I’m trying to set up Grok Bot for the first time on Mac, but I’m unable to get past the initial loading screen.

When I open Grok Bot, the app displays a black screen with a white loading dot in the center and never progresses. I’ve waited more than five minutes and restarted the app multiple times, but it always returns to the same screen.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Enable Grok Bot through a Cursor Team account.
  2. Download and install Grok Bot on Mac.
  3. Move Grok Bot to the Applications folder and launch it from there.
  4. Grok Bot opens to a black screen with a white loading dot.
  5. The app remains on this screen indefinitely and never reaches the initial setup.

Expected Behavior

Grok Bot should finish loading and allow me to complete the initial setup and start using the bot.

Operating System

Version Information

Grok Bot version: 0.30.0

I’m reporting an issue with the standalone Grok Bot app rather than the Cursor IDE, so I’m not sure whether Cursor IDE version information is relevant. I can provide it if needed.

For AI issues: which model did you use?

N/A — the issue occurs during Grok Bot startup before I can access or use a model.

For AI issues: Request ID

N/A — Grok Bot does not get past the initial loading screen, so I’m unable to access a Request ID.

Additional Information

Grok Bot is enabled through our Cursor Team account.

I have already contacted support and completed the troubleshooting steps they provided. So far, I have:

  • Confirmed Grok Bot is installed in Applications and launched from there.
  • Confirmed Cursor is signed into the account where Grok Bot was enabled.
  • Confirmed Privacy Mode shows “Privacy Mode” with no Legacy option.
  • Fully quit and restarted Grok Bot multiple times.
  • Reinstalled Grok Bot.
  • Confirmed I downloaded Grok Bot 0.30.0.
  • Checked my network/VPN settings.
  • Changed DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.
  • Retried the setup after waiting.
  • Checked Cursor Settings → Beta. There is no manual “Check for Updates” option available.
  • I do not see a Recover option because Grok Bot never gets past the black loading screen.

The issue still persists after all of the above troubleshooting.

Does this stop you from using Cursor?

:check_box_with_check: No — Cursor works, but with this issue.

Cursor itself is working. However, Grok Bot is completely unusable because I cannot get past its initial loading screen.

I’ve attached a screenshot of the screen where I’m stuck.

The more details you provide, the easier it is for us to reproduce and fix the issue. Thanks!

Hey @Maris_Encarnacion, thanks for the detailed report, and sorry for the trouble getting started.

I looked at the account the app is signed into. It is an admin on your team, but it does not currently hold a paid seat, and Grok Bot is included with a paid team seat rather than with the admin role itself. Because of that, the hosted computer for that account was never created, and the app is stuck waiting on it. There is nothing to reset on our side yet. The app should tell you this instead of sitting on the loading screen, and that part is being improved.

Two ways to get going:

  1. In the Cursor dashboard, open your team’s Members page and give yourself a seat (Standard or Premium both include Grok Bot). Then fully quit Grok Bot and reopen it. It should move on to setup within a minute or so.
  2. Or sign out of Grok Bot and sign back in with a team account that already has a seat.
