Grok Bot 0.39.0 first setup: Reconnecting to your computer forever (Mac)

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

First-time Grok Bot setup on Mac. The app never finishes connecting to Grok Bot cloud computer. Retry loops. No Bots were created.

Exact screens, in order:

  1. Can’t Reach Grok Bot’s Computer. Canned text about firewall, VPN, or proxy such as Zscaler. Retry.
  2. After quit plus sign out/in: Can’t reach your computer. Your Bots are safe, they just can’t be loaded right now. Recover keeps files/logins and removes installed apps. Recover was NOT used.
  3. Still stuck: Reconnecting to your computer… / No saved Bots yet. Retry does nothing. Same on house Wi-Fi and on a phone hotspot.

This is first-time setup. There is no existing Agent Computer that we can see.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Signed in via official onboarding only. Cursor account is michaelpulley at proton.me. Data sharing left OFF. Did not buy Cursor Pro.
  2. Installed Grok Bot for macOS. First version 0.36.0; app later auto-updated to 0.39.0. Same failure.
  3. Full quit (Cmd+Q), sign out, sign in again, wait a minute. Still can’t reach / reconnecting.
  4. Confirmed: no VPN, Mac firewall off, no HTTP proxy.
  5. Phone hotspot (Verizon) — same error.
  6. Set Wi-Fi DNS to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and Google 8.8.8.8, flushed cache, quit and reopened Grok Bot. Same error.
  7. House Wi-Fi again with those DNS servers still set. Still reconnecting. No saved Bots yet.
  8. Did NOT click Recover computer or Reset.

Network checks (house Wi-Fi and hotspot):

  • the us8 and us10 cursorvm test hosts resolve
  • HTTPS HEAD to the us8 cursorvm test host returns HTTP 404, Server awselb/2.0
  • the bare cursorvm name has no A record on 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 (expected)
So this Mac can reach Cursor’s regional VM load balancer. The canned Zscaler/firewall text does not match this network.

Expected Behavior

After first sign-in, Grok Bot should finish creating or connecting the Agent Computer so I can create the first Bot. Retry should not loop forever on a machine that can already resolve and HTTPS-reach the us8 and us10 cursorvm hosts.

Operating System

MacOS

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Grok (Grok Bot). Not using Cursor IDE for this.

For AI issues: add Request ID with privacy disabled

n/a — Grok Bot never connected, so there is no Request ID.

Additional Information

Please check whether an Agent Computer exists for this account and rebuild it on your side if it is stuck in a partial first-setup state.

Same-day Cursor status incident covering Grok Bot and Cloud Agents was marked resolved at 17:07 UTC Sep 3 (incident id dj4cgfmwgm65). First attempt was after they marked it resolved. Status page now says All Systems Operational, but this account’s computer still never loads.

I can paste nslookup if needed. Please do not tell me to Recover/Reset first. Recover was offered, not used, because this is first setup and Recover does not create a missing computer.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. The diagnostics really helped. You’re right, it’s not your network. Your Mac can reach our servers fine, and the firewall/VPN/Zscaler text is misleading and not related to your case.

What’s happening: your account still doesn’t have an explicit Privacy Mode choice saved. During onboarding you only confirmed the data notice, but the actual choice didn’t get recorded. Grok Bot on your computer needs a saved privacy choice before it can connect, so connection attempts get rejected and the app stays on Reconnecting. Retry / Recover / Reset won’t fix this, so you were right not to touch them.

How to unblock:

  • In your browser, go to cursor.com/dashboard and sign in with your email.
  • Open Settings and find the Privacy section.
  • Pick Privacy Mode, keep data sharing off, and confirm.
  • Fully quit Grok Bot with Cmd+Q, then open it again.
  • If it still shows Reconnecting, click Retry once.

It should connect within a minute and let you create your first bot. If it still doesn’t work, send the attempt time with your timezone and we’ll dig in.

I have the exact same issue and tried your above solution to no effect. I am using a Mac and I cannot get it to start it just keeps saying “reconnecting to your computer”. I asked LLM how to fix this and it told me to add 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 to DNS servers which now allows me to open the grok bot app but i am still stuck with “reconnecting to your computer…”. I have tried updating my privacy settings but this has not worked either.

Hey Liam. Quick note on DNS first: 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 don’t matter here, the issue isn’t network related. You can safely change those settings back, they won’t affect the connection.

To debug your specific case, I need a couple things:

  1. Please confirm that on cursor.com/dashboard under Privacy you actually selected and saved Privacy Mode. This is different from just accepting the data notice during onboarding. After saving, fully quit Grok Bot with Cmd+Q, then open it again.
  2. Send the email for the account you’re using to log into Grok Bot.
  3. Share the time of your last connection attempt with timezone, and your Grok Bot version Stable and the build number.

With that info, we can check on our side what’s blocking the connection. Please don’t use Recover or Reset yet, they won’t help in this state.
