Grok Bot: Agent tools to create and manage sidebar sections (parity with CreateChannel)

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

Summary

Please give Grok Bot agents first-class tools to create and maintain sidebar sections (department-style groups), similar to how agents can already create group chats with CreateChannel.

Human UI for one-level sections exists but is easy to miss. Agent tooling cannot bootstrap or maintain org structure even though CreateAgent already accepts section_id.

Environment

  • Product: Grok Bot (Cursor agents / sidebar)
  • Agent tools checked: ListSections, CreateAgent (optional section_id), UpdateAgent, CreateChannel
  • Account observation: ListSections returned no custom sections before any manual grouping
  • Human UI verification (this account): on mobile, long-pressing a bot reveals a control to create a new section / group — it works, but is too deeply buried / hard to discover
  • Official help also documents desktop: right-click agent → Move to → New Section (Grok Bot v1.2.0+)

Expected

For multi-agent “company / department” setups, agents should be able to:

  1. Create / rename / delete (or archive) sidebar sections
  2. Place a new agent into a section at creation time
  3. Move an existing agent into / between sections after creation

This should align with existing CreateAgent.section_id, which already assumes sections can exist and be listed via ListSections.

Ideal developer experience: section maintenance APIs with parity to channel APIs (CreateChannel / UpdateChannel) — so an org “CEO” agent can stand up departments without asking the human to hunt through hidden menus.
Observed Agent tool gap:

  1. ListSections works, but with no custom sections there is nowhere to attach new agents.
  2. CreateAgent accepts optional section_id only for sections that already exist; if none exist, section_id must be omitted.
  3. There is no Agent API to create, update, or delete sidebar sections.
  4. UpdateAgent supports name/description only — no section_id / move-to-section.
  5. CreateChannel creates a group chat (collaboration room, max 6 members), not a sidebar agent section.
  6. Local app UI reference docs do not document how to create or manage sidebar sections, which matches the discoverability problem on mobile.

So: humans can eventually find a buried control; agents still cannot maintain sections programmatically.

Steps to reproduce (Agent / org-setup path)

  1. Goal: create department sidebar sections and attach bots via Agent tools.
  2. Call ListSections → no custom sections; guidance is to omit section_id on CreateAgent.
  3. Inspect available tools → no CreateSection / UpdateSection / DeleteSection (or equivalent).
  4. Attempt to create agents already assigned to departments → cannot, because no section ids exist.
  5. Attempt to move existing agents into sections with UpdateAgent → cannot (no section field).
  6. Attempt to use CreateChannel as a substitute → gets a chat room, not a sidebar section.
  7. Result: agents cannot bootstrap department grouping from an empty sidebar.
  • Verified: ListSections empty on this account before manual grouping
  • Verified: CreateAgent.section_id is attach-only to existing sections
  • Verified: UpdateAgent has no section move field
  • Verified: no section CRUD tools in the Agent tool catalog
  • Verified: CreateChannel ≠ sidebar section
  • Verified (this account, mobile): long-press bot → create section control exists but is poorly discoverable
  • Official help documents Move to → New Section (v1.2.0+); desktop path also easy to miss (“a bit hidden” per prior staff notes on forum)
  • Related nested-folder requests already exist — please don’t treat this as a duplicate of nested trees

Impact

  • Sidebar stays flat for multi-bot orgs unless the human discovers a buried control
  • Hiring / role-change workflows cannot toolize “create department → place bot”
  • Existing bots cannot be reassigned to sections via Agent tools
  • Channels are not a substitute (different object; size limit; not sidebar grouping)
  • Blocks scaling department layouts that CreateAgent.section_id already implies

Workarounds tried

  • Naming prefixes (e.g. 工程·…) — readable, but not real grouping
  • Department Channels — collaboration rooms, not sidebar sections
  • Manual mobile long-press / desktop Move to → New Section — works for one-level sections, but discoverability is poor and not automatable

Requested fix

Please add Agent support for sidebar sections with parity to channel management:

  1. Create / update / delete (or archive) sidebar sections via Agent tools (analogous to CreateChannel / UpdateChannel)
  2. UpdateAgent (or equivalent) to move an existing agent into / between sections
  3. Keep ListSections as the source of truth for valid section_id values
  4. Improve discoverability of the human UI path (desktop + mobile) and document it clearly in product help / in-app UI reference
Nested sidebar folders / department trees already have Feature Requests; happy to +1 those rather than open another nested-folder thread:

Evidence

Actual

Thanks for writing this up, @J_Firing. The gap you described is accurate.

Agents can list sections that already exist, and CreateAgent can place a new agent into one of those sections. There is no agent tool yet to create, rename, delete, or move sections. CreateChannel starts a group chat, not a sidebar section.

You can create a section yourself: on desktop, right-click an agent and choose Move to → New Section. On mobile, long-press the bot. It works, and it is easy to miss. We’ve let the team know about both the agent-tools request and how hard that menu is to find. I’ll post here with any relevant updates!
