Grok Bot: Ahrefs plugin fails with “Failed to load connector”

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

  • Cursor IDE
  • Cursor CLI
  • Background Agent (GitHub, Slack, Web, Linear)
  • BugBot
  • Somewhere else: Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

In Grok Bot, the Ahrefs marketplace plugin / MCP connector fails to load.

UI shows: Failed to load connector

MCP / connector status for user-Ahrefs:

  • error: failed_to_load
  • tools: 0
  • plugin id: 56809965

The plugin never becomes usable; no Ahrefs tools are exposed to the agent.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Grok Bot (iOS) and/or use the shared Grok Bot box MCP surface.
  2. Install / enable the Ahrefs plugin (marketplace plugin id 56809965).
  3. Open Plugins / MCP connectors and inspect Ahrefs / user-Ahrefs.
  4. Observe UI: “Failed to load connector”.
  5. Observe MCP status: failed_to_load, tools=0.

Expected Behavior

Ahrefs plugin loads successfully, connector connects, and Ahrefs MCP tools are available to the agent.

Actual Behavior

Connector fails to load. UI: “Failed to load connector”. MCP: user-Ahrefs error failed_to_load, tools=0, plugin 56809965.

Hey @jsolly, thanks for the report.

This is a known issue we’re already tracking, and I’ve added your report to it. Right now Ahrefs’ service is rate limiting the connection attempts that Grok Bot makes on your behalf, so the connector never finishes loading and shows “Failed to load connector” with no tools. It is not something you can fix from your side, and reinstalling the plugin or re-adding the account won’t help.

We’re looking at changing how Grok Bot connects to Ahrefs so it backs off and retries instead of failing, and I’ll update this thread as things develop! In the meantime, the connector may occasionally load if you retry later, but it will be unreliable until the change is out.

Hey @Colin !
Do we have any updates on the rate-limiting issue here? Would love to have this unblocked so that our process can be smoothly integrated. Appreciate it!

Hi @jsolly I’m the Ahrefs developer behind API and MCP.
Thanks for reporting this! You can refer to this comment for a workaround and explanation

Thanks @leomensan. This is the same issue as GrokBot - Ahref connector rate-limited, and I’ve added my latest details there (iOS 1.14.0, free Ahrefs account, still never connects). Let’s keep the discussion on that thread. This topic can be closed as a duplicate.
