Grok Bot computer-use agents stall and fail to complete simple tasks

Describe the Bug

Product: Grok Bot – Agent Computer / Computer Use

My Grok Bot’s computer is working normally and is accessible. However, when I assign tasks that require interacting with the computer, the bot performs a few clicks or actions and then stops making meaningful progress.

Simple tasks that should take only a few minutes can take hours or remain unfinished. The problem is not that the computer is unreachable; the bot can initially control it but fails to complete the assigned work.

Please investigate whether this is related to the computer-use agent, task execution, tool-call handling or a stalled agent runner.

I can provide request IDs, screenshots and examples of failed tasks if needed.

Steps to Reproduce

The bot begins executing tasks but stalls or becomes extremely slow, leaving tasks incomplete.

Expected Behavior

The bot should continue executing computer actions until the task is completed or report a specific error if it cannot proceed.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

1.12.0 (308)

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey @Joe_Levy1, thanks for the report!

I looked at your bot and the computer itself is healthy, and each click or keystroke completes in a few seconds. What’s slowing things down is how the work gets handed off. For computer tasks, your bot hands the job to a separate computer-use helper that keeps working in the background after the chat reply. When a new message arrives while that helper is still working, the bot tends to stop it and start over, so the task never gets far.

I can provide request IDs, screenshots and examples of failed tasks if needed.

That would be very helpful!

Hi Colin

Thank you for getting back to me. I actually was not able to pull the request ID and the screenshot are not going to help much.

Yes the computer looks healthy and responsive but the bot is not able to complete simple tasks and looks like it stopped working. I have compared this with other solutions and it looks very unresponsive. I’m also familiar with browser use tool and it looks the bot forgets about the task until I ask for progress and that’s when it does one more thing and then stops again. Publishing a simple X post was about 1 hour when I was already logged in on the session. After sending this message I created another bot within Grok Bot and asked a simple question to look for a flight at united.com and was not able to complete the task after 20 minutes. It was not even able to do a simple search. I’m worried not only because I moved all my flows to Grok Bot and that took me more than 1 week but also because it has been consuming a good chunk of my super grok plus weekly limit without completing the tasks (the main issue I found is managing the browser the rest works very good).

I really appreciate your help on this. I have updated to the latest version for the computer and grok desktop and is still happening.

Joe

Hi Colin

I have updated the bot computer again and tried again something very simple. Update an article on joomla. Here you have the request id: dad2f5bc-1536-418e-ab14-3c11e712f80b

I also asked the bot to time the process, this is the full log I got from the bot.

I appreciate your help on this, because I’m consuming a lot of credit without being able to complete each browser task.

bot log.pdf (69.5 KB)

Hey @Joe_Levy1, thanks for running that test and for the timed log, it helped a lot.

This time your bot kept working the whole time, and the slowness was on our side. On your computer, the bot’s built-in browser steps (reading the page, switching tabs, clicking, uploading a file) were each waiting one to three minutes before running, when they normally take about a second. Some connector actions are hitting the same wait. This isn’t caused by anything you set up, and updating or resetting the computer doesn’t clear it, so please don’t spend time on that.

You can help us pin down exactly what’s stuck. Your bot’s terminal on the computer is running at normal speed, so it can collect this in about a minute:

  1. Open a new chat with any of your bots.
  2. Paste this message exactly as written and send it:
Use your Shell on your computer to run these five read-only commands one at a time. Don't change, restart or delete anything. Paste the raw output of each one back to me, labeled 1 to 5.
1) grep -o '"[0-9a-f-]\{36\}":[0-9]\{1,3\}[,}]' /home/box/.sand-window-assignments.json
2) ps -eo args | grep -o 'cdp-endpoint http://127.0.0.1:[0-9]*' | sort | uniq -c
3) for p in $(seq 9223 9240); do curl -s -m 3 -o /dev/null http://127.0.0.1:$p/json/version && echo "$p up" || echo "$p down"; done
4) free -m; nproc; uptime
5) timeout 90 grep -rIhos "MCP server connection timed out after [0-9]*ms: [A-Za-z0-9._-]*" /tmp /var/log /home/box 2>/dev/null | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn | head -20
  1. Wait for the reply, then copy everything it pastes back and post it here (or send it to me in a private message if you prefer). It’s fine if one of the sections comes back empty.

In the meantime, you can add this to your tasks: “Use on-screen clicks and typing on the computer instead of the browser automation tools.” That path is running at normal speed on your computer, so Joomla tasks should go much faster for now.

Sorry, not sure how to send you a DM. I checked on your profile and I see no option. I don’t want to paste sensitive info for everyone to see

@Colin I’m not the OP here. What’s the best way to check whether our bots are using browser automation tools vs on-screen clicks and typing please?

I notice relatively slow clicks between pages on the browser (~ 10 seconds between each click).

Thanks!
