Grok Bot: UI rename for bots/agents often fails to stick (agent self-rename works)

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

  • Somewhere else: Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

Grok Bot’s UI rename for bots/agents often does not stick. Reporter tried renaming River Rubber Necker in the product UI; the new name did not take. Workaround that worked: ask the bot/agent to rename itself (agent-side profile update).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In Grok Bot, open rename for an existing bot (sidebar / edit name UI — exact control Gap: not confirmed which surface).
  2. Enter a new name (example: River Rubber Necker).
  3. Confirm / save.
  4. Observe: name does not persist / UI rename fails.
  5. Ask the agent to rename itself → succeeds.

Expected Behavior

UI rename should persist the bot display name the same way an agent-driven rename does.

Additional Information

  • Frequency: “often” / recurring for this reporter
  • Workaround: instruct the agent to rename itself
  • Distinct from Cursor IDE chat-tab rename bugs (e.g. streaming focus loss) — this is Grok Bot bot/agent display name in the Grok Bot app
  • Public forum only for this pass (in-app SendFeedback pending user choice)

Does this stop you from using Cursor?

  • No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey @jsolly, thanks for flagging this!

You’ve already landed on the best workaround: asking the bot to rename itself sticks, and that’s the right move for now. What you’re seeing isn’t intended behavior, and it’s on our side, not your setup. This is an issue we’re tracking.

One thing that’d help us match your case: which device did you rename “River Rubber Necker” on (desktop or iPhone)? And if you rename it there again, does the new name show up on your other device after ~30 seconds? That pins down where it’s dropping.

In-app SendFeedback also submitted for this report (dual-path cross-link).

Still answering Mohit’s device questions: which surface the River Rubber Necker UI rename was tried on (desktop vs iPhone), and whether a rename on one device shows on the other after ~30s — will follow up when we have that.

Answers to your device questions:

  1. Surface: the UI rename fail looks mobile-only. Desktop UI rename works for me.
  2. Cross-device: a mobile UI rename did show up on desktop, but then on mobile the name reverted at runtime (so it looked like it stuck briefly / synced out, then mobile rolled back).

Happy to try another repro if useful.
