[Grok Bot] Voice dictation in Portuguese arrives as English text

Describe the Bug

In Grok Bot, when using voice input while speaking Portuguese, the transcribed draft appears in English (translated) before/when sending — even though OS/keyboard dictation language is already set to Portuguese (Brazil).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Set OS/keyboard dictation language to Portuguese (Brazil)
  2. Open a Grok Bot chat
  3. Use voice input and speak in Portuguese
  4. Observe the draft/transcribed text before sending

Expected Behavior

Transcription should stay in Portuguese, matching what was spoken.

Actual Behavior: Text shows up in English (appears auto-translated) even though dictation is PT. Confirmed by user: “Estava em português mesmo.” Happens before the message reaches the agent. Grok Bot Settings has no voice-language control (tabs are General / Plugins / Team Setup / Appearance / Updates).

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. We looked into it and what you’re describing isn’t related to your OS or keyboard settings. Voice input in Grok Bot uses its own mic recording and does transcription on its side, so the system dictation language doesn’t apply. Right now, voice is being processed as English, and non-English speech comes back translated.

There isn’t a separate language selector for Grok Bot voice input yet, so this is expected with the current behavior, but it shouldn’t be like this from a UX point of view. I’ve shared this with the team and we’re tracking it. I can’t give a timeline yet, but I’ll post here when there’s an update.

As a workaround for now, typing in Portuguese works fine since the language isn’t forced when you type.

Describe the Bug

Thanks for looking into the Portuguese dictation report so quickly, Dean. The Grok Bot idea is strong: a small staff of bots on real work, not a toy. That’s why we’re on it.

The missing language selector you described is exactly what we keep hitting. Voice coming back in English is one piece. Typed Italian is the one that blocks us.

We run this team in Italian: landings, student care, social, internal briefs. Replies still read like English drafted first, then translated. Calques, leftover English, phrasing we would never send. There is no language control in Settings (General / Plugins / Team Setup / Appearance / Updates).

A picker would help. Even without one, the bot should follow the language we are using, on demand, as the work moves. Italian with me, English when the work is English. That’s what I expect from an AI like Grok: dynamic, not a frozen English pipeline.

As it stands, Grok Bot does not let us work this way. We can’t put this output in front of students or on a brand.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Grok Bot (desktop, early beta).
  2. Confirm Settings has no language control (General / Plugins / Team Setup / Appearance / Updates; Appearance is Theme only).
  3. Type in Italian, at length, about real work (not a one-line hello).
  4. Read the bot’s reply.

Expected Behavior

The bot follows the language of the thread as we go, with native written Italian. No leftover English, no calques. A language picker is optional. Dynamic follow-the-user language should work without one.

Actual Behavior

Typed Italian still comes back sounding translated from English. Same missing language layer you already confirmed on voice: no selector, English pipeline. Cursor IDE already hit this on Italian voice (topic 146320) and later got a picker. Grok Bot shipped without one.

Could you track written non-English quality the same way as the STT path? Is native follow-the-user language, or a language setting, already in the works, and is there an ETA you can share? Happy to send a short before/after if that helps the team.

Yes, for this workflow. We can’t ship Italian copy from Grok Bot as it is.

Good news on voice dictation: it no longer forces English. Transcription now follows your app or OS language, so Portuguese speech should come through in Portuguese. This shipped in the latest Grok Bot update 0.23.0. Update and try again, and let me know if anything is still coming back translated.
