Grok Bot Windows: Computer stuck in partial state — Reset failed

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

My Grok Bot on Windows is stuck on the “Can’t reach your computer” screen. Attempting to use the reset tool results in the error: “Reset failed. The reset couldn’t finish. Grok Bot’s computer may be in a partial state.”

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open the Grok Bot desktop application on Windows.
  2. The app fails to connect and displays the “Can’t reach your computer” screen.
  3. Click on the “Reset” or “Recover” button to restore the remote agent machine.
  4. The system attempts to reload, but halts midway and throws the error: “Reset failed. The reset couldn’t finish. Grok Bot’s computer may be in a partial state - retry to run the reset again.”
  5. Clicking “Retry” indefinitely loops back to the exact same partial state error message.

Expected Behavior

When clicking the “Reset” or “Recover” button, the cloud system should completely wipe the broken virtual machine instance, provision a fresh, working agent computer, and automatically re-establish a stable connection to the local desktop app without getting stuck in a half-built or partial loop state.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

Unknown / App is completely locked on a white screen with a black circle in the middle upon startup, preventing access to the version info panel. Running on the latest Windows Desktop build.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. Good news: your Grok Bot cloud computer is fine. It’s working normally, and all your Bots, files, and logins are still there. You don’t need to restore it, so please don’t click Reset or Recover again. Reset isn’t needed here, and when the connection comes back, recovery will try to rebuild something that’s already healthy.

It looks like the Grok Bot app on your Windows PC just can’t reach our servers. It connected fine before, so something likely changed on the PC or on its network. The app connects directly and does not use Windows system proxy settings, so security software, a proxy, or a VPN can block it even if the browser works normally. That also explains the stuck loading screen and the failed resets. The app is waiting for a connection it never gets.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Fully quit Grok Bot: right click the tray icon bottom right near the clock, then click Quit. Reopen it and wait 2 minutes.
  2. Check security software: antivirus with HTTPS scanning or web protection, a corporate proxy, or a VPN. Temporarily disable that feature or add Grok Bot to exceptions, then quit and reopen the app.
  3. In Windows: Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. If a proxy is enabled, turn it off or add an exception. Also try with VPN turned off.
  4. Install the latest Grok Bot version over your current one from Cursor · Download. You’re on 0.30.0, which is a couple weeks old. Newer builds show clearer connection errors. Your Bots are stored on the cloud computer, so reinstalling won’t lose anything.
  5. Network test: connect your PC to a mobile hotspot, quit and reopen Grok Bot, then wait 2 minutes. If it works on hotspot but not on your normal network, something on that network or on the PC security setup is blocking it.

If nothing helps, tell me which step you got stuck on, and paste the lines containing [unavailable] or [internal] from %APPDATA%\Grok Bot\desktop-structured-log-spill.v1.json. Let me know how it goes.

Thank you so much! It was Kaspersky.

you saved my life, god damn kaspersky
