# How to restore chat history

### Describe the Bug

I navigated out of the chat history flow and went to click on a local file. When I tried to navigate back by clicking on the chat history icon, nothing was there like a clean slate.

Hey, thanks for the report. It looks like you accidentally switched workspaces.

In Cursor, chat history is tied to a specific project folder (workspace), not global. If you opened a file via File \> Open File (instead of opening the workspace), Cursor created a new empty context.

Check the bottom-left status bar. It shows which folder/workspace is currently open. To restore the history:

- File \> Open Folder, then select the project folder you were working in before
- Or File \> Open Recent, then pick the right workspace from the list

After you open the correct workspace, the history should come back.

If the history is still empty even in the correct workspace, let me know and we can look into a different issue.
