IDE reopens all previous closed chats

Hey,

Yep, this is a known bug on our side, not anything you’re doing wrong. On restart, Cursor restores your previous tab set, and right now it doesn’t fully honor tabs you’ve closed or your open-tabs limit on startup, so closed chats can come back. We’ve had this reported before and are tracking it, though I don’t have an ETA to share yet.

A few things that can help in the meantime:

  1. If your project sits in a OneDrive-synced folder (like Desktop or Documents), try moving it somewhere that isn’t synced. Cloud sync can churn the saved state and make this worse.
  2. Lowering your Max Tab Count (Cursor Settings → Chat → Max Tab Count, or search “Max Tab Count”) trims the extra tabs, but heads up: it doesn’t stick across a restart, so it’s more of a per-session cleanup than a real fix.
  3. If one project is really stuck, you can fully reset its saved state. Important: this deletes that project’s saved chat history and settings, so back up anything you want to keep first. Fully quit Cursor, then delete that project’s folder under %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage\<hash>\ and reopen.

We’re collecting details and posting updates in the main thread here: Cursor re-opens closed chat tabs on each launch. Let me know if any of the above helps!
