I just want to take a moment to publicly apologise.
Cursor, you beautiful, reliable, shockingly helpful AI code editor, I’m sorry I ever looked in another direction. I thought I could recreate the magic with a home cooked cocktail of Roo, Cline, and half baked LLMs. I was wrong. So, so wrong.
I thought why pay for something when I could duct tape an open-source LLM to a vs extension, sprinkle in a few magic rules, and whisper sweet prompts into a janky low res model. How wrong I was!
I thought I could recreate a Cursor vibe with some Frankenstein version - nope not possible!
To anyone out there thinking, “I’ll just host my own LLM and use a vs code ext please save yourself time.
Cursor, you complete me. I promise I won’t stray again.
Best open source LLMs are about 6 months behind best corporate LLMs.
You can use them of course, but they are much much slower, and unreasonably unintelligent compared to cloud versions.
If you have no money and somehow a PC or laptop with 30GB+ of RAM, or an old server with fast NVME, you can run free models, but you have to provide lots of updated documentation and instructions.
