When Cursor shows that there’s a new update available, and I click “Install”, the update is installed and Cursor restarts. When it restarts, all the windows I had open have been closed, and the only window is the Agents window. The “Window” dropdown in the menu bar does not list any of the windows that I previously had open (so no, they’re not minimised or hidden or in another macOS space).
This means I have to go and re-open all the folders that I previously had open.
Steps to Reproduce
Open some folders (via File → Open Folder…).
When the update prompt appears, install the update.
Cry.
Expected Behavior
I expect the windows I had open before the update to be restored.
Hey, thanks for the report. Good news, your windows aren’t gone. After the update, only the Agents Window opening and folder windows not being restored is the current experimental startup behavior in Cursor 3.x. The updater isn’t deleting your projects.
How to get everything back:
You can reopen windows via File > Open Recent. This is the fastest way to bring your projects back.
To go straight to the editor, use File > Open Editor Window, or Cmd+Shift+N, then File > Open Folder. Agents and Editor windows can both stay open.
If you see Open Agents Window on startup under Settings > Agents, turn it off and Cursor will start in the normal editor mode. Some users don’t see this toggle right now due to a known bug, then just use the steps above.
This behavior is known and already reported. I can’t share a fix timeline yet, but I’ll post an update in the thread when there’s one. Let me know if the workaround doesn’t help.

Oh god. Please no. This is awful. How did anyone think that closing all the windows without asking the user was an improvement?!

This seems to fix the problem of the windows being lost, thank you. However, it doesn’t do what the setting says - the Agents window is still opened on startup!
There also seem to be two more related bugs:
Even with the “Open Agents Window on startup” setting switched off, so that windows are restored on startup, quitting Cursor shows a confirmation dialogue which says “This will quit Cursor and close all windows. Are you sure you want to quit?”. So this text isn’t true.
If you restart Cursor by clicking “Install” on the update prompt, this confirmation dialogue isn’t shown, it just nukes your windows for you without warning. (Installing an update is pretty much the only time I restart Cursor.)
I think it’s worth noting that if Cursor didn’t nuke your windows then that confirmation step wouldn’t even be necessary.
I hope sanity will soon be restored!

Glad turning off “Open Agents Window on startup” stopped the window loss.
On the other points:
If the Agents Window still opens on startup even when the toggle is off, it sounds like the toggle doesn’t do exactly what it says. I’ll double-check this on our side. If it’s confirmed, that’s a separate issue from the main one. To avoid mixing everything in one thread, if you want, please start a separate thread specifically for “toggle off but Agents Window still opens”, so it’s easier to track.
and 3. Your notes about the quit dialog text (“close all windows” even though windows get restored) and the fact that Install update closes windows without confirmation are valid. I’ll pass both to the team along with the main report. I agree overall: if the update didn’t close windows, a confirmation wouldn’t be needed.

After last week update my Cursor started closing terminal windows opened in separate windows(even pinned) between restarts. I see no option in cursor to:
Open Agents Window on startup under Settings > Agents, turn it off
Why this is additionally important for me is that Cursor had a weird bug for a while that when I open terminal and move it to a new window and drag it onto my other screen - the font size is decreased a lot and center vertically - causing it to be unusable. The font sizes worked fine after I prepared my terminal windows on the other screen → pinned them down → restarted cursor.
Hey, thanks for the details. There are a few different things here, and some of them aren’t exactly the same as what this thread is about, so let’s split them up so we can track each one properly.
About the missing Open Agents Window on startup toggle in Settings > Agents, that’s a known bug. It’s hidden for some users. I can’t share an ETA for the fix yet.
The other two items should go into a separate thread:
Some terminal windows, including pinned ones, don’t restore between restarts after the update.
The terminal font suddenly becomes much smaller and gets vertically centered when you drag the window to a second monitor.
These look like separate issues, and to avoid mixing them with the main report here, please create a new thread specifically for them. In that new thread, please include:
Your OS and Cursor version from Help > About or Cursor > About.
For the font issue, a short video or before/after screenshot of dragging to the second monitor, if you can.
With that info, it’ll be easier to investigate and track separately. Drop a link to the new thread here once you’ve created it.
