Is it safe to upgrade?

I’m on Version: 1.7.44 and have a workflow nailed that works a dream. When 2.0 came out, I saw on here and reddit the version was getting flamed quite badly. I’m in the middle of a large project which is going really well but now getting messages on Cursor that I’m running a really old version and need to upgrade. I have 2 questions:

1 - is it now safe to upgrade to 2.2?
2 - is the ability to download older versions of cursor still possible - so that I can downgrade again if it doesn’t work for me?

I’m always happy to upgrade to push ahead with new functionality but have always done so between projects.

Thoughts? ty

I am still fairly new to Cursor and am new to this style of programming. The product is amazing to be able to deliver very good working code for a project in a very short period of time. But, looking back to my old-style programming days, I am amazed at how often updates to the product are being ‘released’–every few days, it seems. I have been updating regularly because I am just testing the product. However, I am thinking that, for a programming environment, this is not sustainable. There have been several changes to the ide menuing and functionality over this period. If I had really had a deadline to work toward, these changes would be a great stressor, as I found myself fumbling around trying to do what I had been doing before the update, and realizing things were now different. It seems to me a good compromise would be for some releases to be designated LTS (long term support). That would allow those on a project to continue until they got to a spot where they would have time to explore the new features.

I think it somewhat depends on your OS. Things usually break more on windows. Yes you can downgrade anytime, you might lose your chat history though.
There is nothing that breaks the flow completely in my opinion, based on my usage at least. Some newer features might be buggy in some cases, feel free to browse the forum for more info. But I am pretty happy with latest version.

I wouldn’t recommend it OP. I regret overall upgrading to the 2.X versions as there’s been a lot of critical bugs that can affect your dev work (like terminal outputs not working for the agents preventing proper editing / testing of scripts)

agree

Definitely DO NOT upgrade. Chats are unusable if you want to use dev containers and very unstable functionality. Have been using since 0.10 and that felt more stable. Turns our cursor building cursor doesn’t work so well.

You shouldnt upgrade if you would like to keep your past chats, otherwise seems fine

We are working on fixes for chats.

dont’ update ,It can not work

This is helpful! Good to know the upgrade is generally safe and that there’s a clear rollback option if something does go wrong. Makes the decision a lot easier.
