Kilo - Competition

Any guys trying Kilo …

They make a good pitch or atleast give it a try…

Kilo is great if you want opensource, vscode extension that has a lot of customization and transparency. But you will pay api pricing (likely). I do not like their aggressive cursor marketing, but uh, they are not all wrong. In my opinion they do not offer anything extra for me to switch, except transparency and actually good code. Cursor now breaks down after every other update, which is annoying.

I do not like Kilocode:

  • It is too clunky in its layout
  • Kilo has too much stuff - good for enthusiasts but not for regular engineers who just want to code
  • Many times models fail on execution, go into infinite loops - especially when I use openrouter provider with deepseek and minimax

I prefer Cline because:

  1. Its UI is much cleaner
  2. The model integrations just work – like kilocode, but more reliable if you use Cline’s suggested models
  3. They actually do testing and optimisations for new models and they maintain an amazing blog Cline Blog

Its just me, I prefer Cline for its simplicity, but if I ever need more configuration options, Kilocode is good.

For those wondering why Cline is better, you can compare these two blogs:

  1. MiniMax M2.5 is Here, and it's Free in Kilo for a Week
  2. https://cline.bot/blog/minimax-m2-5

You will see how the approaches of both differ. Kilo is more of a promoter of “Hey use this new model its cool” versus Clines “How well the new model runs in cline”. Cline shows how the models performed in their testing and works with model providers releases fixes if anything breaks.

Decide for yourselves

Didnt OpenAI recently hire basically whole Cline team? Looks to me it will be discontinued soon…

Why would it be discontinued? They hired the team, not the product itself. Cline still remains open sourced, the people working on it will not be the same.
