To keep things simple without any long discussions:
Legacy plan = 500 fast requests + Unlimited Slow pool requests (all frontier models, max or not (or whatever max, tax, brax, they come up with in the future)
I couldn’t agree more; the Cursor team keeps conflating concepts!
The most important point is this: contracts can never be unilaterally modified at will!
This has been rough… long time supporter of Cursor here. Hope this can be resolved with a compromise.
The current policy is simply too restrictive on the new model usage, even the new Cursor Grok model which is classed as a primary pool type model is unavailable off max - I would have liked to try it and maybe have made it my go-to-model with anthropic/openai off limits.
Again, would appreciate a compromise for those who supported Cursor in the early stages.
I can not use latest models since March, 12th, and i think also some other individual legacy plan users as well. So some people were just lucky that it lasted this long. But I don’t like the way Cursor is acting here—without any willingness to compromise.

Imagine someone sells you a Lexus and then hands you the keys to a toyota. Its called fraud.

Also, why are Opus 4.8 and Grok 4.5 only available in Max mode? Opus 4.8 costs the same as Opus 4.6.
My theory is that if they go through with this, they’ll just have to wait until the providers themselves—Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.—shut down the models that are currently still available. Then the only options left will be Auto and Composer. Problem solved for the Cursor team

Various suggestions have been made, after all. But there’s been no response at all. Models that cost the same—or even less—would be a start. And as far as I’m concerned, the others could have slightly higher request fees. But not these totally unpredictable ones. I’d be happy with that.
Cursor, this commercial company that completely disregards the experience of its old users, is truly shameless to the extreme. Musk really misjudged them.
Let’s keep talking about this. We shouldn’t just pretend nothing happened.
Cursor really don’t care a cent about legacy users. And this is the proof. To top it all, Cursor’s own partnered Grok 4.5 model has now became their so-called “Frontier” model, that’s locked behind MAX MODE. Such a shameless move and caring less about their own paying customers will come back to bite them hard one day. In tech industry, it doesn’t take time for companies to fall rock bottom. Then trying to hold on to these few customers becomes the hardest struggle.
They should give us a reasonable latest model
We hope Cursor can give a clear official response: whether there is a downgrade mechanism for frontier models, how long it will take for newly released models to be opened to long-time subscribers, or if veteran users can only keep using legacy models until all historical models are phased out, leaving these long-term users with no available services at all.
I’m a legacy user and could enable enable Max Mode, which I decided to try now this morning because I was blcokced from Grok4.5. However, I noticed that each tool call is billed as a separate request — even when using Composer 2.5, which was charged under Max Mode as well. As a result, I used up nearly half of my monthly allowance in just three requests.
Given this, I no longer see a reason to remain on Legacy Mode. Could you please advise how to disable it? I haven’t been able to locate the relevant setting.

First the legacy plan changes, then the 500 requests, now “Max Mode required” for the models that actually matter — and the explanation is that it was a bug all along.
Maybe technically that’s true. But from the user side, it just feels like another quiet pricing change dressed up as a fix.
Anyway, thanks for the good moments. See you in Windsurf, Antigravity, Codex… or wherever developers are not constantly guessing what their plan actually includes.

lagacy plan users should not let this quietly fade.
It has now been 48 hours since Cursor made this change, and the team still has not adjusted the plan, restored the practical value of legacy access, or given affected users a serious remedy.
That silence matters.
If a company can reduce what paying users effectively receive, wait two days, and still offer no meaningful correction, then users have to ask what “legacy” actually means. A plan is not legacy if its value can be rewritten whenever the company decides the economics are inconvenient.
This is not just about one model, Max Mode, or a temporary product decision. It is about whether Cursor respects the people who supported it before these new pricing structures existed.
Long-time users should speak up. Waiting quietly only makes it easier for the company to treat this as normal.
