On GNOME Wayland, dragging Cursor’s integrated browser preview tab outside the main window does not open it in a separate window. The browser tab’s context menu also lacks “Move into New Window.”
Fully quitting Cursor and relaunching with --ozone-platform=x11 makes detachment work on the same machine.
Steps to Reproduce
Launch Cursor natively under GNOME Wayland.
Open an integrated browser preview.
Drag the browser preview tab outside the main Cursor window and release.
Observe that it does not detach.
Fully quit Cursor and relaunch with cursor --ozone-platform=x11.
Repeat the drag—the preview now opens in a separate window.
Expected Behavior
Dragging the browser preview tab outside the main window should open it in a separate Cursor window under native Wayland, as it does under XWayland.
Hey, thanks for the report, and extra thanks for comparing it with --ozone-platform=x11. That’s really helpful.
There are two different things here.
The missing “Move into New Window” item on a browser tab is expected right now. We intentionally hide it for browser tabs on all platforms, not just Wayland, while we’re sorting out issues with detached browser windows. For regular file tabs, it should still be there.
But the part where drag-out does nothing on native Wayland is what we want to dig into. We have reasons to think this isn’t specific to browser tabs. On native Wayland the app can’t detect where the mouse is released relative to the window, so the “open in new window” step gets skipped for any tab. Can you check this with a normal file tab?
Fully quit Cursor and start it normally, native Wayland, without the --ozone-platform flag.
Open any source file so it shows up as a tab in the editor.
Drag that file tab outside the Cursor window and drop it onto the desktop.
Did a new Cursor window open with that file? Reply yes or no.
Second check: right click the same file tab. Do you see “Move into New Window”, and does it open a new window when you select it?
For now, the workaround is running with --ozone-platform=x11, for example by adding the flag to the Exec line in the Cursor .desktop file. One note: even when detaching works, detached browser windows have known issues with clicks and keyboard input, so keeping the browser inside the main window is the most reliable option right now.
Currently even text files cannot be detached with drag-n-drop in Cursor IDE on wayland (but I do have option to do it via “Move into New Window” action and it works).
Thanks for checking. That lines up with what we expected.
So drag and drop detach doesn’t work on native Wayland for any tabs, not just browser tabs, and Move into New Window works because it doesn’t depend on the cursor position when you release. This isn’t anything in your setup. I flagged it to the team separately as a drag-out issue on native Wayland. I’ll post here if there’s an update. I can’t share an ETA yet.
