Describe the Bug

Someone help! I am working on a big project. This morning, when Cursor generating solutions in the chat, the connection lost and I was unable to proceed. Then I closed the Cursor and opened again. Still unable to connect. Then it asked me to log in my account again. And I did. Then all my chat history wiped off and even, all the Cursor settings wiped off as well.

Steps to Reproduce

Sometimes it lost the connection when producing the results. But after I close and reopen the Cursor app, it reconnected without issues. But this time, it wiped off all my chat history. I am unable to reproduce because it happens randomly.

Expected Behavior

Could you help me to recover the chat history?

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, thanks for the report. Sorry you ran into this.

This is a known bug the team is working on. Unfortunately, once it happens, recovery isn’t possible through the usual methods.

That said, please try this:

  1. Fully close Cursor
  2. Go to %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage\
  3. Check if there’s a file named state.vscdb.backup
  4. If it exists, make a copy of the current state.vscdb, then replace it with state.vscdb
  5. Start Cursor again

One user reported that this helped restore their history:

For the future:

  • Export important chats regularly (three dots at the top of the chat → Export Chat)
  • Consider using the SpecStory extension for automatic exports
  • Make sure you have enough free disk space before updates

Let me know if the backup file helped.

The backup auto-covered, if I reopen the Cursor app, which means I am unable to use it. So if I reopen the app, the backup file auto-cover the older one.
