[Megathread] Cursor layout and UI feedback

I joined this forum simply so I could also emphasize that it is exceedingly frustrating to deal with a constantly changing UI.

Hey! We hear the feedback on this thread and are pausing UI changes. The main UI change has been the agent layout, which came out in Cursor 2.0 after being in early access for the preceding month. The top right arrow icon ←→ shifts the chat side with one click; we know that’s frustrating so we’re figuring out a new path.

Just responded to the comment above - if you use the ←→ arrow icons, you should be back in the chat-on-the-right state, and you can hide the optional sidebar if you prefer. The main change is around a set of sidebars for configuring the agent/explorer/chat panes.

Yeah, and every time I get rid of the chat after the update, the chat is back up to the initial setting!

it seems always breaks something on every single update that works stable in vscode….

Oh yeah, todays new update broke my Editor UI and forcing Agent AGAIN!

I completely agree

+1, removing the file-editor in the default view is a no-go and I almost uninstalled cursor today

When I open files I see a sea of this nonsense - any changes have already been staged in git. There is no “keep all” button” - I dont even want this tbh I just want the functionality off!

It is jarring and I hate it

In simple laymans terms, I should only see the red and green when I have opened a file via the source control panel.

Got it, in one of my projects it actually works great as I can switch between editor view and agent view. One of my projects is in WSL and in there I am unable to change editor<->agent views and it gets buggy. I like the new system. Thank you for the feedback!

Agree, please, do not change UI every day, and please remove hover sidebar with agents history, it’s very noising. Thanks a lot! I like your app very much, just don’t make it better so fast without properly testing.

I was ok with frequent changes, but the latest change trying to merge agent and editor mode since last two days has had me really annoyed. Either I don’t get how to use it properly, or it’s just not built for how I was using it all day: having a companion alongside my IDE, not having one more chatgpt that happens to have (mostly hidden) command line. I want my IDE back !

EDIT: Just noticed from Switching to agent mode / editor mode broken - #21 by zyfihx that my main problem was being in agent mode while thinking it was editor mode ! And the latest ui changes have bugs leading to this confusion: use CMD+E to switch batch to editor, and I’m back to how I wanted it to be !!!

Just updated again and at least now Cursor admits with a little balloon popup that you were “switched to Agent layout” and offers a “back” button to go back to Editor.

  1. it only lasted for a few seconds so I missed pressing the “back” button
  2. why wouldn’t they simply have the balloon popup offer to switch to Agent layout instead of forcing the switch. How could forcing current users to change their layout ever be beneficial unless their goal was to remove the Editor layout in the near future and just have one layout. This is how Cursor roles out all mandatory changes, by making them optional but gradually forcing them more and more then they remove the old way of doing something. Very annoying.

Wait, what? Suddenly there is no Status Bar in the IDE?!
Ah, turns out I need to go to Cursor Settings / Preferences and switch Default Layout to Editor in order to see the Status Bar. Took me a while to figure that out; a morning quest, heh heh.

Seriously? What happened to the editor? It’s gone from a powerful tool to a frustrating roadblock. Hiding the code by default is a massive step backward. It feels like they actively want to make it harder to do our jobs. I need to see my files and code, not stare at some abstract agent view. Even with AI coding assistance, the bedrock of this process is human oversight and auditing—and you’re making that nearly impossible. It’s incredibly frustrating to be forced into this new view when the old one worked flawlessly. It feels like a betrayal of what made this editor great. How can I give clear direction to the agent and actually audit what it’s doing when it’s buried under this layer of abstraction? This isn’t an improvement; it’s a genuine problem.

I personally love my main “sidebar“ to be on the left:

  • when I am in Editor mode I like Files being on the Left
  • when I switch to Agent mode I like the Chat being on the Left
  • I use Cmd+E to quickly change modes

However:

  • a few time ago Agent / Editor modes tabs were removed from the top bar
  • a few days ago they were added back (which I liked)
  • today they removed them again

For me it is fine:

  • having Agent and Editor modes so I can have on the left what I need to focus on and switch between them
  • I liked having the mode Tabs in the top bar so I know better as a hint which mode I am currently in (sometimes I preferred clicking on Tabs rather than Cmd+E)

I think Cursor is the best product I used, I like composer-1 which is extremely fast and 98% reliable for me, I like that my way of programming completely changed 1 month ago when I initially gave Cursor a try (base VSCode user until then) - I don’t like each day my IDE behaves / looks a bit differently though :))

Speaking of the arrow icons, the arrow icons show up even if I have the agent panel disabled with no way to hide them. Please add a way to hide them in the right click settings

Despite having agents turned off, when I click the arrows and switch it to the left side, the new agent button pops up in the top left when it wasn’t anywhere before (it doesn’t even show up when I have it enabled on the right side. Only when I have the chat open does it show up, but it is showing up anyway when agent is set to the left)

There is now no way to just open chat on the sidebar? The button now opens agents instead of chat like it used to. I don’t want agents, I want chat. Where is the button for chat?

Pressing “minimize chat” freezes Cursor for about 2 seconds

Just fixed the navigation controls toggle not being respected. Looking at the others
