Minimize / Maximize / Close icons are invisible in Cursor on Windows

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

The three window control buttons in the top-right corner — Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close — are often invisible in their normal state.

The buttons themselves still exist and are clickable. When I move the mouse over the corresponding area, the hover state appears and the buttons can still be used.

However, when the mouse is not hovering over them, the icons are completely invisible, which makes it difficult to know where the window controls are.

This happens repeatedly and makes basic window operations inconvenient.

Please see the attached screenshot. The red arrows indicate the areas where the three buttons should normally be visible.

Steps to Reproduce

Open Cursor on Windows 11.
Look at the top-right corner of the window.
The Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close icons are not visible.
Move the mouse over those areas.
The buttons are still clickable and respond to hover, but the icons are invisible when not hovered.

Expected Behavior

The Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close icons should always be visible in the top-right corner of the window, even when the mouse is not hovering over them.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report and screenshot. I can see the empty top-right corner where the minimize, maximize, and close buttons should be.

On Windows, in the Agents Window those buttons are native, and Cursor re-colors them to match its theme. While something like the command palette is open, they get hidden temporarily. In your case, after closing it, they don’t redraw. This is a known issue we’re tracking, and I’ve added your report to it. I can’t share a timeline yet, but I’ll reply here if there’s an update.

For now, a workaround is to fully close and reopen Cursor. That usually brings the icons back for a while. The buttons should still work when you hover there, and Alt+F4, Win+Up, and Win+Down also work.

To help us narrow down the trigger, can you try a couple steps and tell me what you see?

  1. Fully close and reopen Cursor in the Agents Window. Do you see the three icons?
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P (command palette), then press Esc.
  3. Look at the top-right corner without moving your mouse there. Are the icons still visible?
  4. Repeat steps 2 to 3 using Ctrl+P (file search).

If the icons disappear after a specific step, tell me which step. If they stay visible, describe what you usually do right before they disappear, like opening Settings, a dialog, or switching windows.

Hi, thanks for the follow-up.

I tried the first step: after fully closing and reopening Cursor, the three window control icons are visible again.

At the moment, I’m not able to verify the remaining steps because the issue is intermittent. I’ve only noticed it a few times recently, and I didn’t pay attention to exactly what I was doing when the icons disappeared.

I’ll keep an eye on it, and the next time the icons disappear I’ll try the steps you suggested and see if I can identify a consistent trigger.

I’ll update you if I find anything useful.

Thanks!

Hey @huangkunkun,

Thanks for testing the restart step. We found what was causing the minimize, maximize, and close icons to disappear in the Agents Window, and a fix is coming in Cursor 3.23.

Please give it another try once you’re on that version. Until then, fully closing and reopening Cursor will still bring the icons back.
