Multiple agent windows automatically open on startup (Windows)

On Windows, every time I launch Cursor, 4–5 separate Agent windows pop up automatically, even after I close all agent windows before exiting.

I have set Window Restoration to Default and turned off the option Continue Interrupted Agents. But the problem still persists. It seems the saved session keeps remembering all previous independent Agent windows and restores them all on startup.

This is very annoying. Hope this bug can be fixed.

Does this stop you from using Cursor?

  • Yes - Cursor is unusable
  • Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor
  • No - Cursor works, but with this issue

The more details you provide, the easier it is for us to reproduce and fix the issue. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the report and the screenshot. I can see four separate Agent windows opening in a cascade on launch.

You read it right. The extra windows are coming from a saved session. On startup, Cursor restores windows it remembers from previous sessions, and right now that restore path does not merge multiple remembered Agent windows back into one. Window Restoration and Continue Interrupted Agents do not affect this, so it is not your settings. This is a known issue we are tracking, and I have shared it with the team.

A couple steps that should help reset the stuck state. Please try these in order:

  1. Close all Cursor windows so the app fully exits. Check in Task Manager whether Cursor.exe is still running. If it is, end the process.
  2. Press Win+R, paste %APPDATA%\Cursor\Backups, then press Enter. Check how many folders are there.
  3. Rename the Backups folder to Backups-old. This is a rename, not a delete, so you can restore it if needed. It only contains unsaved edits from windows you already closed.
  4. Launch Cursor again. How many Agent windows open now?
  5. If it is still more than one, open Cursor Settings > General > Startup, set Window Restoration to Last Used Windows, then close all windows again, relaunch, and count one more time.

Please reply with:

  • the number of folders from step 2, and the window counts from steps 4 and 5
  • your Cursor version Help > About Cursor > Copy
  • how you usually exit, do you close the last window, or shut down Windows while Cursor is still open

That will help narrow down which saved state source is reopening the windows. Let me know how it goes.

After closing all Cursor windows completely, the number of folders under %APPDATA%\Cursor\Backups was 0.

I renamed the Backups folder to Backups-old and relaunched Cursor:

  • Step 4: 6 Agent windows popped up
  • Step 5 (set Window Restoration to Last Used Windows, close all and relaunch): still 6 windows at first. After that, I closed Cursor and opened it again — now only 2 windows appear. Repeating the close‑and‑relaunch test keeps it at 2 windows consistently.

Cursor version info:
Version: 3.21.16 (user setup) VS Code Extension API: 1.128.0 Commit: 8ae78e8eee1e63479c7e0504b664bc0a80c68000 Date: 2026-09-19T06:43:22.276Z Layout: IDE Build Type: Stable Release Track: Default Electron: 42.10.0 Chromium: 148.0.7778.280 Node.js: 24.18.1 V8: 14.8.178.38-electron.0 xterm.js: 6.1.0-beta.291 OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.19045
My usual workflow: I double‑click the Cursor icon → click File on the top left → select Open IDE to open my project in a new window for development. When exiting, I first close the IDE project window, then close the main Cursor window.

Thanks for such a detailed test, it really helps.

The fact that the Backups folder was empty (0 folders) but the windows still opened is a good result. It means the issue isn’t the backup folder, it’s the saved session window list. That matches the restore path that doesn’t collapse multiple remembered Agent windows into one. There’s nothing to fix in your setup. This is an issue we’re tracking, and I’ve shared the details with the team.

The good news is that setting Window Restoration = Last Used Windows stabilized things at 2 windows, and that matches what you actually have open in your workflow (main window + IDE project window). With Default, restore behaves differently and pulls in extra remembered windows.

Recommendation for now: keep Window Restoration set to Last Used Windows. Based on your tests, after a couple of close and relaunch cycles, it keeps exactly the windows that were open when you quit, without multiplying them.

I can’t share an exact timeline for the main issue yet, but I’ll reply in the thread when I have an update. If the window count starts growing again after switching to Last Used Windows, let me know and we’ll dig deeper.
