On-demand is enabled and unused ($0 / $50), but hitting the Other Models limit still force-switches me to Grok 4.6

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

On-demand usage is enabled with a $50 monthly cap. $0 of that $50 has been used. When my included Other Models allowance runs out, Cursor still does not let me keep using Claude / GPT / other third-party models. It force-switches the chat to grok-4.6 instead of charging on-demand.
That contradicts the documented behavior: after included usage is exhausted, on-demand should continue the selected model at API rates, and requests should not be downgraded.

Steps to Reproduce

It happens continuously.

Expected Behavior

What I expected

Pick a third-party / “Other Models” model → included Other Models budget is used first → when that budget is gone, keep using the same model and bill against my $50 on-demand cap.

What actually happens

  1. I enable On-Demand Usage on cursor.com/dashboard → Spending.
  2. I set a $50 monthly limit and save. Dashboard shows On-Demand Usage: $0.00 / $50.00.
  3. I select a higher / third-party model.
  4. After the included Other Models pool is exhausted, I get a toast like:
“Other Models usage limit reached. Switched to grok-4.6.”
  5. The chat continues on Grok. On-demand stays at $0. I cannot stay on the model I chose.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. What you’re describing isn’t a bug, it’s expected behavior, but there’s one easy-to-miss detail.

Auto-switch to grok-4.6 happens when the account the editor is signed into has on-demand turned off (or no cap set), and the included Other Models pool is already used up. On-demand only applies to the account that’s actually sending requests from the IDE.

Please check this. Open Cursor Settings and look at the email on your account, then compare it with the email in the top-right corner on cursor.com/dashboard. If those are different accounts, that’s the reason. On-demand ($50) is enabled on one account, but the editor is running under another account where on-demand is off.

How to fix it (either option works):

  1. In the editor, sign out and sign back in with the account that has on-demand enabled, or
  2. On cursor.com, sign in with the email the editor is using, then go to Dashboard > Spending and enable on-demand there.

If it turns out you have two accounts with an active Pro subscription and you need help sorting out billing or a refund, the team at [email protected] can check the specific account. Let me know how it goes.
